Furiosa's Timeline Unveiled: When is it Set? Exploring the Mad Max Universe

Exploring the Mad Max timeline, this article delves into the setting of Furiosa, accompanied by a brief overview of the movie's plot

The new trailer for the upcoming film Furiosa, a prequel to Fury Road, provides more insight into the movie's timeline and setting. The Mad Max series began with the 1979 film Mad Max, followed by Mad Max 2 (or The Road Warrior in the United States) in 1981, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. All three movies featured Mel Gibson as the main character and followed a linear storyline.

In 2015, writer-director George Miller returned to the franchise, 30 years later, for the prequel Mad Max: Fury Road, with Tom Hardy replacing Gibson. Charlize Theron's Furiosa was equally the lead character alongside Max. Now, the character takes center stage in a prequel to Fury Road, titled Furiosa.

When is Furiosa set? Mad Max timeline explained

According to the Furiosa trailer, the movie kicks off "45 years after the collapse," referring to the event that brought humanity back to the dark ages depicted in the franchise. However, at a convention in Brazil this week, the filmmakers disclosed that Furiosa actually begins 15 years before the events of the previous movie.

The trailer starts with the character as a young girl, showcasing Furiosa's path as the Imperator, from her abduction from her family, to her confrontations with the antagonist Dementus, leading up to Furiosa's appearance in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Anyay Taylor Joy plays the title character in the new movie, Chris Hemsworth is Dementus, while support comes from Alyla Browne and Tom Burke in as-yet-unspecified roles.

What is Furiosa about?

The movie's official synopsis reads: "Amid the world's collapse, young Furiosa is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the clutches of the formidable Biker Horde led by Warlord Dementus. Roaming the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel ruled by The Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants battle for supremacy, Furiosa must endure numerous trials as she seeks a way back home."

George Miller is once again at the helm as director, co-writing the script with Nico Lathouris, and with Guy Norris serving as the stunt co-ordinator.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hits screens on May 24, 2023, and you can read more about the movie here, while fan reaction to the trailer can be found here.

Editor's P/S

As a passionate fan of the Mad Max franchise, I am thrilled to learn more about the upcoming prequel, Furiosa. The new trailer offers a glimpse into the character's origins and sets the stage for an exciting adventure.

The movie's timeline is particularly intriguing, as it takes place 15 years before the events of Fury Road. This prequel will allow us to see Furiosa's journey from a young girl to the hardened warrior we know in the later films. The trailer hints at the challenges she will face, including her abduction and confrontations with the antagonist Dementus.

Anya Taylor-Joy seems perfectly cast as the young Furiosa, and I can't wait to see her bring the character to life. Chris Hemsworth is also an excellent choice for the villainous Dementus. The supporting cast, including Alyla Browne and Tom Burke, rounds out the ensemble.

Overall, I am very excited about Furiosa and can't wait to see it when it hits theaters in May 2023. The movie has the potential to be a thrilling addition to the Mad Max franchise and a satisfying origin story for one of its most iconic characters.
