Rumors of an R-rated version of the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's film have been circulating, but it appears that this is not the direction the horror movie will take. Director Emma Tammi has expressed satisfaction with the original intention of aiming for a PG-13 rating for the project.
In an interview with Forbes, Tammi (known for directing The Wind) offered an explanation as to why Five Nights at Freddy's will be rated PG-13 and why a more violent version is not currently being pursued. "We wanted to make sure that we could include younger audiences, so we aimed for a PG-13 rating. However, we also wanted to incorporate elements of darkness for those who desired a certain level of violence or at least an insinuation of it," she stated.
Tammi discussed the importance of striking a balance in Five Nights at Freddy's "to ensure that we effectively conveyed the right amount of content and employed creative techniques to imply or depict certain events without fully revealing them, in order to maintain a PG-13 rating." Consequently, the director firmly stands by the current version of the film and asserts, "I would advise against expecting an R-rated rendition in this case." In previous discussions, the filmmaker highlighted the influence of Joker and director Steven Spielberg on Five Nights at Freddy's.
Following a swift production process, Five Nights at Freddy's is set to premiere on October 27 in theaters and on Peacock. This horror movie, produced by Blumhouse, commenced filming in New Orleans in February.
In August, Five Nights at Freddy's released its highly anticipated second trailer, depicting the animatronics springing to life with deadly intentions. The film features a stellar cast including Josh Hutcherson (known for his role in the Hunger Games franchise), Matthew Lillard (renowned for Scream and Hackers), Elizabeth Lail, Kat Conner Sterling, Piper Rubio, and Mary Stuart Masterson. The movie is adapted from a popular video game series that originated in 2014.
