SNK has unveiled the first gameplay footage for the revival of its classic fighting game series, known as Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. This highly anticipated entry in the franchise was confirmed at EVO 2022, with a teaser trailer being showcased at EVO 2023. Throughout the 1990s, Fatal Fury, or Garou Densetsu in Japan, stood as one of SNK's most successful fighting game series, spawning multiple sequels and spin-offs. However, after the release of Garou: Mark of the Wolves in 1999, the series took a hiatus as SNK shifted its focus to other franchises.
In recent years, SNK has experienced a resurgence in its fighting game catalog, including the successful revival of Samurai Shodown in 2019 and the release of The King of Fighters 15 in 2022. While the latest installment in the KOF series received favorable reviews, some critics pointed out its limited content. Nonetheless, SNK has actively supported the game through post-launch updates and the introduction of new DLC characters. At this year's EVO tournament, SNK announced Duo Lon as a character in the second season pass for KOF15 and unveiled an exciting trailer for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
Starting with a citywide broadcast, multiple characters engage in a chaotic battle as the trailer commences. The focus then shifts to captivating gameplay footage, showcasing the appearances of two renowned SNK characters, Terry Bogard and Rock Howard, in the enthralling game Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Terry retains his iconic outfit from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, while Rock dons a classic wardrobe akin to his renowned style. Although the models seem to have been repurposed from KOF15, slight visual enhancements have been made.
Additionally, Terry and Rock exhibit their trademark moves, with Terry commanding his Power Wave and Rock unleashing his biological father's Reppuken. Observant viewers of the trailer managed to identify potential fighters who could join this sequel to Garou, as hinted by the introductory broadcast. Alongside Rock and Terry, potential contenders include popular characters such as Mai Shiranui, B. Jenet, Billy Kane, Hotaru Futaba, and even the formidable final boss from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Kain R. Heinlein.
SNK has confirmed that Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is currently in development. The company has not yet revealed the target platforms for the game, but based on their past releases, it is expected to be available on multiple platforms. Additionally, SNK is known for incorporating rollback netcode in their fighting games, such as KOF15, KOF13, and Samurai Shodown.
