Taika Waititi has officially stated that he will not be collaborating with Marvel on the development of Thor 5 in the near future, a decision that has been widely accepted by fans.
Although Waititi has previously worked as a director and actor in other films, such as The Green Lantern, he gained significant recognition with his 2013 creation, What We Do in the Shadows. This offbeat and comedic vampire mockumentary, which he co-wrote, directed, and starred in, propelled Waititi to fame. Following this success, he delivered Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a heartfelt dramedy that received critical acclaim on a global scale.
Plucked by Kevin Feige to direct Thor: Ragnarok, a film highly regarded as one of the funniest and best in the MCU, this rising filmmaker later went on to helm its sequel, Love and Thunder. However, the reception and box office performance of Love and Thunder fell short compared to its predecessor. Since then, the filmmaker has been occupied with various projects such as the upcoming Next Goal Wins, a long-awaited Star Wars film, and a proposed remake of Akira. Currently, there is no availability for him to take on Thor 5 or any additional Marvel projects.
Taika Waititi “won’t be involved” in Thor 5
In a recent interview with Variety at the red-carpet event for Next Goal Wins, Waititi was questioned about the ongoing speculation surrounding the development of Thor 5. However, he revealed that he would not be returning as the director for the project.
“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved… I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for,” he said.
Regarding his Star Wars movie, he mentioned that it is still in progress and he has been actively working on it. In addition, he expressed his desire to adapt Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Incal and Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun, with the latter being a probable future project. Considering the time it has taken for these endeavors, about six or seven years, he believes that another Thor movie will likely be released much earlier. Despite this, he expressed his genuine affection for Marvel and his enjoyment of collaborating with them. He also emphasized his continued support for Chris Hemsworth and emphasized that he would never feel betrayed if Marvel were to collaborate with other filmmakers. To illustrate his perspective, he described their working relationship as an open one, likening it to being in an open relationship where they are both free to explore other opportunities. He concluded by stating that he would be more than willing to work with Marvel again in the future.
Marvel fans react to Taiki Waititi not returning for Thor 5
Following the mixed reception of Love and Thunder, the online Marvel fandom has expressed enthusiasm over the change in Thor's creative direction, as evident by numerous comments using phrases such as "good" or "thank god."
"Ragnarok was appreciated, but I am ready to bid farewell after Love and Thunder," commented one individual. "I admire his creative approach to the character, although I must admit that the fourth film suffered from production flaws," expressed another.
"Although I love Taika, I'm actually fine with the way Thor: Love and Thunder was handled. It's a bit disappointing considering how amazing Ragnarok was," expressed a third individual. "With all due respect, I hope Taika continues to focus on comedy, as he excels in that genre. Personally, I'd prefer to see Thor portrayed as a deity," commented a fourth person. "I enjoyed the comedic approach in Thor's storyline, but I believe it's time for his character to embrace a slightly more serious tone," shared a fifth individual.

Editor's P/S
As a fan of Taika Waititi's work, I am disappointed to hear that he will not be returning to direct Thor 5. I enjoyed his unique and comedic take on the character in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, and I think he brought a lot of fresh energy to the franchise. However, I understand that he has other projects that he is passionate about, and I respect his decision to move on.
I am also excited to see what other projects Waititi will work on in the future. He is a talented filmmaker with a lot of range, and I am confident that he will continue to make great movies. I am particularly interested in his upcoming Star Wars film, which I think has the potential to be something really special.
