Family hostage situation prompts suspension of flights at Hamburg airport

Flights suspended at Hamburg Airport due to a family hostage crisis, causing disruption to air travel German police are working to resolve the situation in what is described as a family drama

Flights to and from Hamburg Airport have been suspended since early Sunday morning local time, due to a hostage situation described as a "family drama," as confirmed by a representative of Hamburg Police. The incident unfolded on Saturday when a 35-year-old man forcefully entered the airport premises, driving his car underneath an airplane. As of midnight on Sunday, the driver continues to remain in his car along with his 4-year-old daughter.

A significant number of special forces are currently deployed on the ground, working on resolving the hostage situation, according to the spokesperson. Prior to this, the man's wife had alerted the Hamburg-Stade police about her missing child.

Following the parking of his car on the tarmac, there were reports of acoustic disturbances, potentially resembling gunshots, as stated by the spokesperson. Thankfully, all passengers aboard the aircraft were safely able to exit the plane through a gangway without any harm.

Flights have been temporarily suspended at the airport due to a significant police operation, according to an announcement on the official website. The website states that take-offs and landings are currently not permitted as a result of a federal police measure.

This is a developing story.
