Kidman fully immersed herself in the character of Masha by adopting a thick Russian accent on set and insisting on being called by her character's name.

During a Television Critics Association panel in 2021, she shared her approach to maintaining a calm and healing energy on set. Kidman would often place her hand on people's hearts or hold their hands to connect with them. Despite others using her real name, Nicole, she would only respond to being called Masha.

In a November 2018 interview with The Guardian, Moriarty discussed why she chose to set her novel at a health retreat. She mentioned her "sympathetic" view towards the idea of self-improvement.
