"I remember the first time I dated a girl, and suddenly everyone was asking if I was a lesbian. I was only 21 years old at the time. It made me think that maybe my relationships have hurt the people I've been with. It wasn't because I was ashamed of being openly gay, but more so because I didn't like feeling like I was giving myself away to the public. It felt like a violation of privacy. During that time, I was quite guarded," Stewart shared with InStyle in November 2020.

Even in my past relationships with men, we always tried to avoid being photographed together, doing things that would no longer be just ours. Looking back, I realize that I didn't fully grasp the added pressure of representing a community or queerness. It's only now that I can truly understand it.
