Kristen Stewart's Ultimate Breakup Anthem: How Tyson Ritter and All-American Rejects Helped Her Heal

Tyson Ritter of All-American Rejects reveals to Us Weekly that Kristen Stewart personally confided in him about how one of the band's songs played a crucial role in helping her overcome a painful breakup

Tyson Ritter, the lead singer of The All-American Rejects, revealed that one of their songs, titled "There's a Place", had an unexpected impact on Kristen Stewart. He shared that he wrote this song for the film "Miss You Already", which starred Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore. Ritter also mentioned that he had the opportunity to appear in the film, which was directed by Catherine Hardwicke. While discussing the band's Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour, Ritter disclosed that he was in his London flat, playing the ukulele when the inspiration for this song struck him.

Ritter portrays the character Ace in the 2015 dramedy film. The movie features Barrymore, aged 48, and Collette, aged 50, as two close friends whose lives are disrupted when one of them receives a cancer diagnosis.

Following a performance of the song at a charity function attended by Hardwicke, aged 67, and Stewart, aged 33, Ritter recounted how the actress shared that the melody had assisted her in overcoming a difficult romantic experience. (Hardwicke was the director of the inaugural installment of the Twilight series.)

"[Kristen] approached me and said, 'You're the one who wrote this song?' and I responded, 'Yes.' She then exclaimed, 'I just went through a difficult breakup and I absolutely love this song,'" he revealed. "I was completely taken aback because, here was Kristen Stewart, someone I admire and who is a talented artist, expressing her appreciation for something I created."

While Stewart did not reveal the specific details of her breakup, the song was released two years after her separation from her Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson, with whom she had dated from 2009 to 2013. (In 2012, it was revealed by Us that Stewart had cheated on her then-boyfriend, Pattinson, with director Rupert Sanders, who was 37 at the time.) After her split with Pattinson, Stewart began a relationship with Alicia Cargile in 2014, but their romance ended in 2016.

Stewart has had romantic relationships with various celebrities, including St. Vincent, Soko, Stella Maxwell, and Sara Dinkin, before finally getting engaged to Dylan Meyer in November 2021.

“There’s a Place” not only had an impact on Stewart but also on Ritter. According to Ritter, he approaches everything with a lot of self-deprecation and it is usually difficult for him to like himself. However, this song made him feel a sense of self-worth that he hasn't experienced in a while. It was a special moment for him to realize that a song he created more than 20 years after their career started had its own little biosphere.

Aside from "There's a Place," Ritter also expressed his particular pride in other All-American Rejects songs such as "Mona Lisa," "Believe," and especially "Swing, Swing" which holds a special place in his heart.

He continued, "I always find myself thinking, 'I really enjoy this song.' And whenever people ask me, 'Doesn't it become exhausting to play these songs?' I simply respond by saying that when you witness someone singing it... right in front of you, it brings the song to life. It fuels you with an energy that allows you to perform it back to them with the same passion and enthusiasm."
