Rumors are circulating that Rockstar Games is currently in the process of developing a potential remake of the popular game Red Dead Redemption, with speculations pointing towards the utilization of the Unreal Engine. Increased suspicions arise from the recent website update made by Rockstar and a job opening for a Designer of Open World Events that strengthens the possibility of a remastered version.Rockstar Games, known for creating the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series, is reportedly developing a remake of the 2010 game, Red Dead Redemption. There are indications that the game may be powered by the Unreal Engine, as hinted by a job listing on Rockstar's official website.
Red Dead Redemption, originally released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, takes place in 1911, during the fading era of the American frontier. It portrays a time when the West was ruled by outlaws and lawmen. The story follows John Marston, a former outlaw who is pressured by government officials to kill his former gang members in order to save his captive wife and child. While Red Dead Revolver, released in 2004, is considered a prequel to the Red Dead Redemption series, the connection between the two is not very strong. The recent inclusion of a new Red Dead Redemption logo on Rockstar's website, along with a job listing for a Designer of Open World Events for their San Diego office, suggests the possibility of a Red Dead Redemption remaster. This is further supported by the mention of experience with the Unreal Engine in the job listing, which raises doubt about the theory that Rockstar is solely focused on developing Grand Theft Auto 6.
There are indications that Rockstar may be utilizing their own proprietary engine for GTA 6, arousing speculation that they may require someone with Unreal experience for the rumored redo or remaster of Red Dead Redemption. Since the release of Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis in 2006, the studio has predominantly relied on their custom-built RAGE engine for their games. However, the recent launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition in 2021 saw them using Unreal Engine 4. This collection, which received mixed reviews, was developed by Grove Street Games—a studio based in Gainesville, Florida, specializing in adapting console and PC games for mobile platforms.
It is still too early to determine the exact reason why Rockstar is searching for a game designer with experience in Unreal Engine for an open-world project. Although many studios develop their games using custom engines, it doesn't mean that other software cannot be utilized during the development process. Considering the numerous rumors floating around, it is not impossible to imagine that Rockstar might employ Unreal Engine to revive the popularity of Red Dead Redemption. The game is currently accessible on PS3 and Xbox 360.
