Grand Theft Auto 6, the highly anticipated release from Rockstar, has taken the longest time to develop out of the series due to the continuing success of GTA 5’s online component. While GTA 6 will surely bring exciting new features, there are likely to be some familiar elements introduced in its predecessor that will carry over. GTA Online has had long-term success, largely due to the introduction of microtransactions in the form of Shark Card virtual currency packs. Despite the controversy surrounding microtransactions, it is expected that GTA 6 will continue to include them in its online mode, ensuring record profits for Rockstar’s publisher, Take-Two Interactive. In an industry where microtransaction sales have become one of the main sources of income for many companies, it would be highly unlikely for Take-Two to forego this lucrative revenue stream with the upcoming title, especially considering that GTA Online is still being supported with updates to this day.
Red Dead Online's Gold Bars Already Continued an MTX Trend
Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode, like GTA Online, will have in-game purchases in the form of Gold Bars. These are similar to GTA's Shark Cards, which have been adapted but function the same way. Despite more attention being given to GTA Online, Take-Two may want Rockstar to focus on monetizing GTA 6's online mode. The company may rely on long-term microtransaction purchases from players to keep the game going for years after its release.
It's unclear whether GTA 6 will have an online multiplayer mode when it's released, something that hasn't been seen in the series since GTA 4 in 2008. Having a successor to GTA Online alongside the single-player story at launch would allow the online component to define the game from the start, unlike its predecessor. In GTA 5, players had to wait for the online mode to be released in an update that was fleshed out over the years with subsequent patches.
Microtransactions in Grand Theft Auto Have Always Been Controversial
GTA 6's emphasis on online gameplay continues to solidify the franchise's connection with in-game purchases and frequent updates, a strategy that has been both controversial and highly profitable. Dedicated fans of GTA Online have experienced numerous updates from Rockstar, which have transformed the game into a dominant force in the gaming industry. However, this success has not gone without some criticism. Players have voiced complaints about the game's unbalanced aspects and increased costs, as Rockstar's frequent content updates have added up to a large collection of expensive virtual items that provide a significant advantage in Los Santos.
Given the immense financial success of GTA Online, it is highly likely that the game's primary monetization method will be implemented in the upcoming GTA 6. Leaks suggest that Rockstar is currently developing only the single-player mode, but with GTA 5's lifespan being significantly extended by the popularity of its online mode, it is clear that the next installment is intended to have a similarly long-lasting impact. While it is almost certain that GTA Online will make a comeback with its well-known Shark Cards, it remains to be seen how far GTA 6's online gameplay will go with regards to microtransactions.
