The never-ending wave of '90s nostalgia continues to gain momentum. Gargoyles, a cartoon series from that era which didn't receive the recognition it deserved, seems to be making a comeback in the form of a live-action movie. And to top it off, there might already be a famous name attached to the project.
Although Gargoyles has faded from the limelight since its original run, save for an upcoming remastered version of the beloved Gargoyles video game, it may have slipped from the collective memory of many in recent years. This '90s animated show stood out with its intriguing concept: ancient supernatural creatures were trapped in stone and revived in present-day New York. While this might not seem exceptional at first glance, Gargoyles captivated audiences with its mature themes and compelling storylines. Finally, it appears that the dedicated fans of this show may get their long-awaited vindication.
Rumors are swirling about a potential live-action Gargoyles movie in the works. Adding fuel to the fire is the news that the project may be directed by Kenneth Branagh, a renowned filmmaker from Northern Ireland who has worked on various films, including 2011's Thor. Although Giant Freakin Robot initially reported the rumor, their track record for accuracy has been questionable. However, the Belfast Telegraph also added some credibility to the speculation. While these rumors are still unconfirmed, there is some momentum building behind them, which could bode well for fans.
Aired from 1994-1997 as part of Disney Afternoon, Gargoyles drew in the crowds not only with its premise of nocturnal creatures protecting the city, but also with its impressive voice cast. The lead character Goliath was voiced by the legendary Keith David, and the late Ed Asner portrayed fellow gargoyle Hudson. The main cast also included Jeff Bennett, Salli Richardson, and the iconic voice actor Frank Welker.
Interestingly, there have been previous discussions about a Gargoyles movie. Although the idea was initially proposed before the series ended, the film project was ultimately abandoned after the finale. However, in 2011, there was a revival of interest as a script was being developed by David Elliot and Paul Lovett, the writers of the blockbuster action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It remains unclear whether this new rumored project will utilize their script or have any ties to previous attempts, but regardless, it is exciting to have news about it.
It is uncertain if any of the original stars will reprise their roles in the live-action film. However, it is important to reiterate that this is only a rumor, although it does appear probable. While Branagh has impressed viewers as the quick-witted detective Hercule Poirot, one can only hope that he can achieve the same level of success as the director when it comes to satisfying the fans who have eagerly awaited the return of their beloved Gargoyles heroes for decades.
