Quake 2 Remastered has unexpectedly released on Xbox Game Pass and other platforms after much anticipation. Xbox Game Pass subscribers and current owners of Quake 2 will receive an update that includes enhancements to resolution, the addition of online multiplayer and co-op with cross-play support, and a brand-new episode for players to conquer.
The announcement of Quake 2 Remastered took place at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas, during the highly anticipated QuakeCon 2023. This marks the first in-person edition of QuakeCon since 2019, when the event was forced to go remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's event, running from August 10 to August 13, promises to be a thrilling return to form. To kick things off, the confirmation of Quake 2 Remastered was the perfect way to excite fans and put an end to the leaked information and speculation surrounding the project. The original version of Quake 2 allowed players to assume the role of Bitterman, a Marine assigned with stopping the invading extraterrestrial Strogg by launching a preemptive strike on their home planet.
Quake 2 Remastered takes a departure from the Lovecraftian horror of its predecessor and instead embraces a science-fiction theme. This exciting sequel introduces a variety of online multiplayer matches, such as Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch. Additionally, players can enjoy the game's online co-op mode, which includes cross-play functionality for both PC and console users. The developers have made significant improvements to accessibility settings, as well as enhancing the shadows, textures, and lighting throughout every level.
Players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S will have the opportunity to experience Quake 2 Remastered at resolutions of up to 4K, with a 120hz refresh rate on compatible monitors. However, to achieve this level of performance on PC, it is necessary to have at least an Intel Core i5-6600k or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, as well as an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD RX Vega 56 graphics card. Furthermore, this remastered version offers new content, including the Call of the Machine expansion created by MachineGames. Alongside this, players will also have access to the original expansions, The Reckoning and Ground Zero, with AI enhancements from the latter available in all episodes.
Quake 2 64 will be offered as a bonus to allow players who missed out on that specific version of Quake 2 to enjoy it. In addition, Xbox Game Pass subscribers should not pass up the opportunity to experience Quake 2 again, or possibly for the first time with Quake 2 Remastered.
Quake 2 Remastered is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
