Summary
Director David Ayer has revealed that James Gunn promised to release his version of Suicide Squad, known as the Ayer cut, in the future.
Despite concerns, the release of the Ayer cut poses no threat to the DC Universe reboot since it exists independently from Gunn's new DC Universe.
The release of the Ayer cut wouldn't garner the same level of demand for a sequel as Zack Snyder's Justice League did.
David Ayer, director of Suicide Squad, has shared on Twitter that James Gunn, the new creative chief of DC Studios, has made a promise to potentially release Ayer's intended version of the film, known as the Ayer cut. The original movie underwent significant changes by the studio before its theatrical release, and Ayer has been advocating for his vision to be made public. Now, it seems that there may be a chance for his desired outcome to come true.
According to the director, Gunn has made a promise that his version of the movie will eventually be released, with Ayer stating, "Gunn assured me that it will have its moment to be shared." The director of The Suicide Squad also acknowledges the time it may take for the Ayer cut to be released, considering Gunn's current focus on launching his new DC Universe. Gunn is now occupied with writing and directing Superman: Legacy, the first movie in the DCU, scheduled for 2025.
Why The Suicide Squad's Ayer Cut Won't Hurt The DCU Reboot
Releasing the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad at this point would have no negative impact on the upcoming DC Universe reboot. After the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December, which will be the final installment of the current live-action DC continuity, there is only the announcement of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 3 that remains.
With director Zack Snyder's movies set in the envisioned world coming to a close, the release of the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad would have minimal impact on the new DC Universe. Director James Gunn has already released a beloved sequel to Ayer's Suicide Squad, titled The Suicide Squad in 2021, which effectively served as a soft reboot of the original. This film then led to the creation of the series Peacemaker, which Gunn has confirmed will be a part of the new DC Universe for its second season. This means that any connections moving forward between the DCEU's Suicide Squad and the Ayer cut would be related to Gunn's The Suicide Squad, even if the Ayer cut is eventually released.
Due to this, the demand for Ayer to direct a sequel to his movie would likely be less significant if the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad were to be released, compared to the Max release of Zack Snyder's Justice League which prompted a campaign for Snyder to complete his Justice League trilogy. As Gunn's attention is now primarily focused on the 2025 DCU reboot, it is probable that the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad will only become available on home video or Max platform in a few years' time.
