New images of a younger Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) have been released for The Continental, a television prequel set in the same universe as the John Wick franchise. Despite John Wick's apparent death, his friend and mentor will return in a new form. The franchise, which gained popularity in 2014, introduced audiences to the impressive skills of Keanu Reeves as the hitman. While there have been discussions about a potential fifth film, fans can temporarily satisfy their cravings with the upcoming TV show.
Following a young Winston before he assumed the role of manager at the assassin hotel, The Continental will present a '70s-era rendition of the highly successful franchise. Peacock has provided an exclusive preview of a dapper Winston within the art deco ambiance of the iconic elevator. "The story is set approximately 30 to 40 years prior to the events depicted in the films. With the original producers involved, we are committed to maintaining strict continuity and honoring their distinctive style," revealed Woodell (via GamesRadar+). "Furthermore, the 1970s setting allows for a refreshing departure in terms of aesthetic."
In addition to Winston, viewers can get a closer look at new characters in the set of photos. Some of them include Ayomide Adegun, who will be taking over the role of Charon previously played by the late Lance Reddick, and Mel Gibson, who will be portraying Cormac, the current manager of The Continental. The stylized prequel will undoubtedly showcase Winston's journey to becoming the leader of the establishment. Many questions surround the series, including how it plans to handle this.
The main challenge faced by any prequel is fitting seamlessly into the existing storyline of the beloved franchise it originates from. Star Wars, for example, often faces difficulties in making events coherent within the timeline influenced by Order 66. Fortunately for John Wick, this task should be somewhat easier. John Wick excels at demonstrating exceptional fighting skills while keeping dialogue to a minimum. Therefore, a prequel should not negatively impact the John Wick franchise, especially since the show will not focus on Winston or the younger days of John.
Winston's backstory remains a mystery to fans prior to his assumption of the role of hotel manager. All they have witnessed is his unpredictable nature at its worst and his unwavering support for John at its best. But what factors have shaped him into a paternal figure, embodying a blend of stern affection towards John? The answers to these questions will undoubtedly unfold when The Continental makes its debut on Peacock, slated for September 22, 2023.
