The Marvels is set to build upon various Marvel projects and, despite its ambition, promises to effectively bring forth fresh faces such as Park Seo-Joon and Zawe Ashton.
The latest international poster for The Marvels showcases Park Seo-joon as Prince Yan, giving viewers a stunning glimpse into his majestic role in the film. Although details about Park's character remain limited, comic book hints at a potential union between Prince Yan and Carol Danvers, which may or may not be explored in the movie. Fans eagerly await the unveiling of the storyline on November 10, 2023.
The Marvels provided a fresh glimpse of Park Seo-joon and Zawe Ashton's characters, resembling typical Marvel figures. While additional information about Ashton's antagonist Dar-Benn is always appreciated, Park's depiction as Prince Yan appears to be the most intriguing portrayal of his enigmatic ally character yet.
In a bold move, The Marvels takes on the challenging task of continuing the storylines of five Marvel projects, including Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel. Consequently, one might question how the film will find time to introduce new characters. However, the promotional materials featuring Park and Ashton suggest that the film will successfully accomplish this feat. Ashton's character has been identified as a morally ambiguous villain striving to rebuild her home following a civil war. On the other hand, Park's involvement, as a renowned South Korean actor, has been shrouded in secrecy in the months leading up to the release of the Captain Marvel sequel. This even includes withholding a comprehensive introduction to his character.
Marvel's latest international poster for The Marvels provides a fresh glimpse of Park's Prince Yan. Dressed in royal attire, Prince Yan stands prominently on the right, granting us a clearer view compared to previous marketing materials. Alongside him, the poster showcases the main cast, which includes Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (don't fret, the irresistibly fierce little kitty/flerken Goose also makes a return). Meanwhile, below them, Ashton's Kree revolutionary warrior Dar-Benn looms, her menacing presence ever apparent.
Park's character remains shrouded in mystery in The Marvels, while Yan's presence is established in the comics, albeit briefly. In the comic storyline, Carol Danvers ventures to Yan's planet, Aladna, where women possess the autonomy to select their life partners, without involvement from the men. Conflict arises when a mutant named Lila Cheney utilizes her teleportation abilities to arrive on Aladna and decides to wed Prince Yan. Years later, upon Lila's return as an adult, she discovers that the engagement remains legally binding.
Seeking assistance, Lila turns to Carol, urging her to help nullify the undesired marriage. Unexpectedly, a conqueror named Marlo enters the scene (Marvel has encountered conquerors before) and assumes the challenge of winning Yan's hand in marriage by engaging Lila in combat. Instead, Carol confronts and defeats Marlo, securing the victory and the right to wed Yan. However, Carol selflessly renounces her claim, allowing Yan the freedom to choose his own partner. Consequently, Yan takes a significant step towards reform by abolishing the traditional practice on Aladna, thus granting individuals the freedom to select their own life partners.
The Marvels has minimal connection to this. Yan remains a prince and is likely to cross paths with Carol. However, the movie is unlikely to keep hidden characters like Lila and Marlo. Speculations suggest a potential marriage between Carol and Prince Yan, but the type of marriage remains uncertain, whether it will be legitimate or "trial by combat" style. Perhaps Dar-Benn will replace Marlo. Regardless, fans can anticipate the resolution in a short while. The Marvels is scheduled to hit theaters, including IMAX, on November 10, 2023.
