Exclusive: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Star Speaks Out on Peter Parker's Shocking Transformation

Yuri Lowenthal, the talented voice and motion capture artist of Spider-Man, shares his perspective on the highly debated facial alteration controversy in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 game series

Yuri Lowenthal, the lead actor in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, has expressed his exhaustion with the constant debates surrounding altering Peter Parker's facial features in the game. Lowenthal discussed his feelings with ComicBook.com ahead of the highly anticipated release of Spider-Man 2. As a result of the immense success of Marvel's Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games and released in 2018, Insomniac was officially acquired by Sony. The game's popularity also influenced the character's portrayal in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Controversy ensued when the remastered version of the original game for PlayStation 5 was released in 2020, as it showcased a noteworthy alteration to Peter Parker's facial model. Insomniac clarified that the change was implemented to enhance the synchronization of facial animations with Yuri Lowenthal's performance. However, some fans, who preferred actor John Bubniak's previous, more mature appearance, criticized the adjustment. They argued that it seemed like an effort to replicate the younger Spider-Man portrayed by Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which they felt was incompatible with the veteran web-slinger established in the first game.

Lowenthal commented, "The performance remained the same for me. I quickly moved past it when they explained, 'Hey, we want to make this change so that the facial animation is improved.' I immediately agreed! It doesn't matter if he looks like a goblin. If my performance benefits, then count me in. To be honest, I'm quite tired of discussing it because I believe everything that needs to be said has been said."

Lowenthal commented that the aftermath of the game affects individuals differently, with some taking a longer time or even never fully recovering. Despite this, he finds solace in the fact that players were emotionally invested and passionate about the initial game. He acknowledges that the connection with the character is a remarkable achievement, and encourages fans to move on from the changes made in the game. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for release on October 20 exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
