The June 2023 Nintendo Direct has fulfilled the long-held desires of Super Mario RPG fans by announcing a remake of the game for the Switch. Alongside this exciting news, Nintendo has also revealed a new 2D Super Mario game and a title featuring Princess Peach, giving fans of the iconic mascot much to anticipate. The aim of the Super Mario RPG remake is to faithfully recreate the original game, including its art style and isometric perspective, while also giving it a fresh and stunning 3D look. Despite the nostalgic visuals being preserved, there are also new features in this version that will add a special touch to the adventure, even for experienced players.
Super Mario RPG's Strange New Combat Mechanics
In the gameplay trailer for SMRPG, fans will immediately notice a new addition among the familiar elements. Positioned in the left-hand corner, there is a circular meter measured in percentages that gradually increases during both the player's and enemy's turns. This meter seems to be connected to the Action Commands, which fans of Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi series may already be familiar with. While the previous Mario RPGs maintained the use of Action Commands, it was Super Mario RPG that originally introduced this feature.
Although Super Mario RPG has a history with the Action Command system, the percentage gauge is a new addition. Additionally, there is a Chain counter that appears to keep track of the consecutive successful execution of Action Commands. It seems that reaching higher numbers on the Chain counter potentially provides boosts to various stats. However, the SMRPG trailer does not provide an explanation for this mechanic, leaving fans to eagerly await further updates in order to fully comprehend the functionality of this meter.
How Super Mario RPG Makes What's Old New Again
The remake of this classic SNES game has exceeded fans' expectations. While some fans may have been willing to sacrifice the isometric perspective or art style for a remade version of SMRPG, the game is being faithfully recreated in 3D, with a few additional improvements.
The trailer showcases one of the major enhancements in the remake - fully animated 3D cutscenes. In the original game, memorable moments in Super Mario RPG were presented through sprites and text boxes. However, similar to the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Switch remake, it seems that significant moments will now be depicted with cinematic cutscenes. Additionally, there is a strong likelihood that special moves will feature their own unique animations as well.
Yoko Shimomura, the composer for Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi series, and the soundtrack of Kingdom Hearts, has confirmed her involvement in the remake. This ensures that the trailer's beautifully recreated music bears the touch of its original composer. With the upcoming release of the new version of SMRPG, fans can anticipate further surprises, including the possibility of at least a small amount of voice acting. However, more news is yet to come in the following months, solidifying its confirmed release date of November 17 for Nintendo Switch.
