The following contains spoilers for the Justified: City Primeval season finale.
Summary
Loretta McCready's cameo, originally intended for the City Primeval finale in Justified season 2, was ultimately removed as executive producer Michael Dinner found it illogical to include her character.
The production team attempted to incorporate Loretta into the Detroit storyline but were unsuccessful.
Executive producer Michael Dinner discloses that a character from Justified season 2, whose cameo was removed from the Justified: City Primeval finale, was Loretta. After being absent from television for eight years, Timothy Olyphant's rebellious U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens finally returned this year for one final adventure. Justified's reboot on FX relocated the story to Detroit, where Givens found himself up against a new antagonist, Clement Mansell, played by Boyd Holbrook. However, beloved characters like Boyd Crowder, portrayed by Walton Goggins, were noticeably absent. This changed in the City Primeval finale when Crowder finally appeared, alongside Winona, played by Natalie Zea, Gregg Sutter, played by David Koechner, and Dan Grant, portrayed by Matt Craven.
How City Primeval’s Cameos Could Set Up Another Justified Season
According to EP Dinner, plans were once considered to bring back Kaitlyn Dever's character Loretta McCready from Justified season 2. However, it was ultimately determined that including her in the story set in Detroit would not have made sense and would not have been organic to the narrative. Nevertheless, Dinner expressed the admiration for the actress and the desire to find a way to incorporate Loretta into the storyline. Loretta had a significant role in season 2 as a foster child seeking revenge for her father's murder but only made sporadic appearances in later seasons.City Primeval was marketed as a completely independent story within the series, focusing solely on Raylan Givens. The show successfully maintained this independent narrative until the very end of the finale. In the final scenes, Raylan's long-time adversary, Boyd Crowder, managed to escape prison with the assistance of a female accomplice. Simultaneously, a retired Givens received an urgent phone call regarding Crowder's escape.
This sets up the possibility of another season of Justified, where Givens, who retired briefly, comes out of retirement to track down his old enemy. While it hasn't been confirmed yet, another season would allow Raylan and Boyd to have one final confrontation, bringing a greater sense of closure to the series. Additionally, it could be a good opportunity to incorporate legacy characters like Loretta in a natural and logical way, similar to the potential return in Justified: City Primeval.
