It appears that a new DLC for Resident Evil 4 may be on the horizon, based on an update to the Steam version of the game. Although Capcom has not yet confirmed plans for additional post-launch content, datamined files have hinted at the highly anticipated return of Separate Ways, a beloved story mode from the original 2005 version. Following the release of the game's first free DLC, the Mercenaries mode, two weeks ago, the absence of Separate Ways is the only notable difference between the 2023 remake and the original game.
The Japanese developer has not yet confirmed if Separate Ways will be included in the game, but the recent update to the Steam version of Resident Evil 4 adds seven new achievements, indicating the possibility of a significant content update. Five of the new trophies are hidden, and the other two have placeholder names that do not provide any information about their requirements or the game itself. Considering that Separate Ways introduced a lengthy campaign featuring Ada Wong in the original game, it is likely that a new version of this mode could account for the increased number of achievements, which now stands at 46 in the Resident Evil 4 remake.
This aligns with a recent leak about Resident Evil 4, which speculates that the Separate Ways DLC will be revealed or released in the second half of 2023. The update to the achievements list makes this speculation highly plausible. However, it is still unclear if Capcom will charge fans for the opportunity to experience the story of Resident Evil 4 from Ada Wong's perspective.
Although the Mercenaries mode was given out for free, Separate Ways is more similar in scope to the paid DLC expansions Winters' Expansion for Resident Evil Village and End of Zoe for Resident Evil 7. In contrast, the previous two Resident Evil remakes from Capcom didn't receive significant post-launch support that could be directly compared. They simply included paid cosmetics, which are not on the same level as a substantial expansion that would add 20% more achievements to the game. It's possible that Capcom may choose to release Separate Ways as paid DLC. The specific details of the expansion's business model are still uncertain, but what is clear is that Separate Ways will provide a completely fresh perspective on the events of the Resident Evil 4 remake.
Resident Evil 4 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
