Exclusive: Hideo Kojima's Mysterious Picture Hints at Epic Playstation State of Play Event

Mysterious photo of Hideo Kojima ignites speculations of an upcoming PlayStation State of Play event, leaving fans eagerly anticipating exciting announcements and news from the gaming industry

Highlights

The recent picture of Hideo Kojima working on video editing software has sparked rumors of another PlayStation State of Play stream.

There is speculation that a State of Play event may occur soon, despite them not typically happening in October, which is fueled by a photo. This speculation arises due to the fact that Kojima, whose studio is only confirmed to be working on Death Stranding 2, is editing the promo.

A seemingly harmless image of Hideo Kojima has ignited speculation about the next PlayStation State of Play, suggesting that another event filled with exciting game trailers could be on its way. In addition, people are now hopeful that there might be news about Death Stranding 2 coming sooner than expected.

The previous PlayStation State of Play livestream took place on September 14th. Although these broadcasts occur quite regularly, historically, Sony has avoided scheduling State of Play events in October since they were introduced in 2019, with only one exception.

Despite this, a recently surfaced photo of Hideo Kojima sitting at a computer has sparked rumors of an upcoming State of Play event. The photo, shared on Twitter by Kojima's personal assistant Ayako Terashima, shows the renowned game designer using what appears to be Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software. Twitter user ItzPaulHD_v1 was the first to notice that the active project in the photo seems to start with "State_of_Play." Combined with Terashima's confirmation that the photo was taken on September 27, speculation has arisen that the next PlayStation State of Play stream may be happening soon.

Sony has only hosted three State of Play events in the fourth quarter since establishing the tradition four and a half years ago. The only time a State of Play livestream took place in October was in 2021. It should be noted that the mere fact that Kojima is currently working on a trailer does not necessarily mean that a State of Play broadcast will occur as early as next month. Based on his and Terashima's social media history, it typically takes anywhere from three weeks to several months for the game designer to complete editing a trailer.

Assuming this recently surfaced photo indeed shows Kojima working on a State of Play video, it is highly probable that the featured content is related to Death Stranding 2, the only confirmed PlayStation game currently being developed by Kojima Productions. After a series of teasers, the sequel to Death Stranding was officially announced in December 2022 through a four-minute trailer unveiled at The Game Awards. However, instead of providing clear answers, the trailer raised more questions, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further updates from Kojima, which are yet to be received.

Alternatively, if this ongoing editing endeavor is not connected to another PlayStation State of Play stream, it is plausible that Kojima is involved in creating the reveal trailer for his enigmatic Xbox console exclusive, rumored to be titled Overdose. However, considering Phil Spencer's recent suggestion that Kojima's Xbox project is still in its early stages, this possibility seems less likely.
