Bethesda has set its sights on creating the ultimate fantasy-world simulator with The Elder Scrolls 6. Although first announced at E3 2018 through a teaser trailer that offered little information, anticipation for the game has remained incredibly high. This is in part due to the fact that it has been over a decade since the release of its highly acclaimed predecessor.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, which debuted in 2011, received widespread acclaim and is often considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Given the immense success of Skyrim, one might assume that Bethesda would prioritize the development of The Elder Scrolls 6. However, the company decided to take a different approach. Instead of immediately diving into the next installment of the Elder Scrolls series, Bethesda focused its attention on the Fallout franchise, delivering titles such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Furthermore, the development team has been diligently working on Starfield, a highly ambitious open-world science fiction RPG that is quickly approaching its anticipated release date.
It has been a considerable amount of time since Skyrim was released, leading to extremely high expectations for The Elder Scrolls 6. However, if Bethesda manages to achieve its objective for the game, it should successfully meet the overwhelming anticipation. According to Todd Howard in a recent interview with GQ, Bethesda aims for The Elder Scrolls 6 to become the "ultimate fantasy-world simulator," taking into account the significant time interval that has elapsed.
The Elder Scrolls 6 is not expected to be released for many years, possibly not until 2028. When asked if he regrets announcing the game at E3 2018, Todd Howard mentioned that he might have announced it in a more casual manner. He also mentioned that the game has a codename, but did not disclose it during the interview with GQ.
Although Todd Howard has previously hinted that The Elder Scrolls 6 may be his last directorial project, he expressed his desire to continue developing games indefinitely in the GQ article. He acknowledged that his approach to game development may evolve over time, citing the example of Shigeru Miyamoto who continues to develop video games even at the age of 70.
