Starfield: Unveiling an Uncharted Open World Experience

According to Todd Howard's recent interview, Starfield's absence of a widely embraced open-world feature, which has gained significant popularity over the years, has been confirmed

Starfield will not include a fishing feature, as confirmed by Todd Howard in a recent interview. This omission is worth noting due to the increasing popularity of fishing in video games over the past few years. Games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Diablo Immortal, Far Cry 5, and others have incorporated fishing to varying degrees, particularly in open-world games and farming simulators. Interestingly, fishing has been added to Skyrim Anniversary Edition's Creation Club content, allowing players to craft fishing rods and engage in the activity at specific locations throughout the game. While some fans may have hoped for a similar feature in Starfield, it will not be available upon its release.

During a recent episode of Kinda Funny Xcast, Todd Howard from Bethesda joined the conversation to discuss Starfield. The interviewer, Gary Whitta, asked a question from Jez Corden of Windows Central regarding the presence of a fishing mechanic in the upcoming game. Howard confirmed that players will not be able to engage in fishing activities such as using a fishing rod to catch and sell or cook space fish. However, it seems that players will still have the ability to kill and collect fish in the game, albeit without the traditional fishing method. This distinction is significant and sets Starfield apart from games like the base version of Skyrim and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where players can use abilities and weapons to kill fish and gather their remains. The possibility of killing and collecting fish in Starfield suggests a similar gameplay mechanic, but without the inclusion of a fishing rod. This discussion starts at the 14:40 time mark in the video provided.

Although the question may seem lighthearted, Whitta recognizes two important factors that could have potentially justified the inclusion of fishing in Starfield. Firstly, fishing is a popular feature in open-world games, making its absence noteworthy. Secondly, Whitta mentions that the search for extraterrestrial life often begins with the exploration of organisms found in water or seas. Given that Starfield's main storyline revolves around the discovery of what lies beyond our planet, alongside the Constellation organization through the discovery of alien artifacts, the idea of incorporating fishing into the game is not far-fetched.

It's worth noting that while the inability to go fishing in Starfield may disappoint some players, it doesn't drastically impact the overall experience. With a multitude of planets to explore and the expansive nature of the Bethesda game, there is still plenty to look forward to. Additionally, considering the active modding community, it's highly likely that a fishing mod will be available in the near future. Mark your calendars for September 6, as Starfield will be launching on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
