Fans campaigned for Warner Bros. to release the Green Lantern scene that was cut from Zack Snyder's Justice League.
The fan campaigns shed light on Warner Bros.' mismanagement of the DC franchise and its connection with fans. These campaigns advocate for various cuts and restorations. Fans contend that there is no justification for Warner Bros. to not complete the Green Lantern scene during post-production and release it as a tribute to the film, prior to proceeding with the DCU reboot.
Zack Snyder's Justice League fans and Green Lantern actor Wayne T. Carr have united in a campaign against Warner Bros., expressing their discontent over the studio's decision to remove the Green Lantern scene introducing John Stewart. Despite the studio's initial claims of having plans for the character, there has been no visible progress even after two and a half years.
For those observing from the outside, keeping track of the various fan campaigns surrounding the DC franchise can be challenging. What initially started as the demand to release the Snyder Cut has now expanded to include the calls for the Ayer Cut, the restoration of the Snyderverse, the release of the Schumacher Cut, and even the idea of selling the Snyderverse to Netflix. These campaigns reflect the sentiment among some fans that Warner Bros. has mishandled the DC franchise. Now, a new campaign has emerged, centered around a specific Green Lantern scene that Snyder had previously hinted at but was denied the opportunity to include in his version of the film by the studio.
Fans have dubbed the cut of Zack Snyder's Justice League that includes the Green Lantern scene as the Emerald Edition. Originally, the movie's final scene was meant to feature John Stewart warning Bruce Wayne about the impending threat of Darkseid at his lake house. However, Warner Bros. prohibited Snyder from using Green Lantern and instead offered Martian Manhunter as a replacement. Over the past two and a half years, fans argue that the studio has not showcased any plans for the character aside from canceling a Green Lantern HBO Max series. Now, with an upcoming DCU reboot, fans believe there is no reason not to complete the scene in post-production and release it as a tribute to the movie before moving forward. Snyder had initially proposed to WB the idea of letting the world decide who Green Lantern is by casting their respective choices, but the studio did not stand by this reasoning for removing Green Lantern from Zack Snyder's Justice League. Therefore, in order to have a basis of comparison, fans expressed their support with the hope that WB would heed their voices.
In order to facilitate a seamless transition into the DCU reboot, David Zaslav, James Gunn, and Peter Safran should consider taking into account the opinions of the fan base and its directors regarding the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, the Emerald Edition of Zack Snyder's Justice League, and the Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever. These versions merely require some post-production work to be completed.
However, WB has a history of publicly opposing the Snyderverse fan base, and has even expressed regret over the release of the Snyder Cut. Fortunately, with new leadership at WBD and DC Studios, there exists an opportunity to bridge the divide between the different factions of DC fans before the reboot potentially further alienates the audience.
Zack Snyder's Justice League is available on MAX.
