Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña recently shared his idea for a 30-year reunion after the conclusion of the popular Karate Kid sequel show's sixth season. Following the events of the original Karate Kid movie, Cobra Kai follows the rivalry between Billy Lawrence (played by William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (played by Ralph Macchio) as Lawrence reopens the Cobra Kai dojo with Miguel Diaz (played by Maridueña) as his first student. After five successful seasons, the show's creators announced that season 6 would be its final installment.
In an interview with V Magazine, Maridueña expressed his mixed feelings about the show coming to an end and revealed his desire to potentially reunite for a sequel series in 30 years, similar to Zabka and Macchio.
What’s Next For The Karate Kid Franchise After Cobra Kai Season 6?
:It fills me with a mixture of emotions. Undoubtedly, it does. I mean, I practically grew up alongside every cast member of the show. Just like how those high school years hold great significance for teenagers, I spent those very years with these amazing individuals. Therefore, I genuinely hope for the opportunity to collaborate with them once again. I can't help but sense that the festivities are drawing to a close. Especially during the filming of this final season, there is an undeniable air of conclusion. However, it is comforting and advantageous when crafting a narrative to have the autonomy to conclude the show on our own terms. We were truly fortunate in that regard. I am confident that I speak on behalf of everyone when expressing our immense gratitude for having experienced six incredible seasons—something that seems surreal. I sincerely wish for a reunion in 30 years, perhaps to create something like "Cobra, Kai v2." I hold a deep affection for those guys.
Instead of making fans wait another 30 years, a reunion series for Maridueña is in the works with a scheduled release date in late 2024. Sony plans to bring back the original Karate Kid franchise, which has left many viewers confused as its premise aligns with what Cobra Kai has already delivered. Adding to the confusion, Cobra Kai's events will not connect to the upcoming movie.
Furthermore, Ralph Macchio, the original Karate Kid, has revealed that he has been occupied with preparations for Cobra Kai season 6 and has not been approached to appear in the upcoming movie. Consequently, there are numerous inquiries regarding how this installment will tie back to the original franchise. Many speculate that it will be another attempt at a reboot following the unsuccessful 2010 film starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Additionally, there are theories suggesting the potential return of Hilary Swank's character, Julie Pierce, from 1994's The Next Karate Kid.
However, the most promising idea for the new movie's direction originates from Macchio himself. He has proposed an origin story for Pat Morita's character, Mr. Miyagi, which would not only pay tribute to the franchise's history but also avoid any conflicts or overlaps with Cobra Kai. Nevertheless, audiences currently have limited information and can only rely on rumors and unfounded speculation. Sony could still surprise everyone by taking an unforeseen approach with their new Karate Kid movie.
