Ubisoft has recently given the go-ahead for a remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag; however, the project is still in its early stages of development. The official unveiling and release of the game are years away, leaving plenty of room for potential changes. In addition to this remake, Ubisoft is currently working on multiple new Assassin's Creed games as part of their ambitious plans for the franchise. Some of these titles include AC Mirage, AC Hexe, AC Red, and AC Nexus, a VR game featuring Ezio, Connor, and Kassandra.
What sets Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag apart is that, while there have been remasters and ports of other Assassin's Creed games, full-fledged remakes have been few and far between. Breaking this trend with the remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is definitely exciting, especially considering Ubisoft's dismissal of rumors regarding an AC1 Remake a few months ago. It would have made more sense for Ubisoft to prioritize a remake of AC1, properly executed and on par with Capcom's successful Resident Evil remakes. Regardless, it remains to be seen if Ubisoft has a comprehensive plan for remaking the Assassin's Creed franchise, and what the future holds in that regard.
Speaking to anonymous sources, Kotaku was the first to report the news of an upcoming remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. According to these sources, the project is still in its early stages and is expected to take a couple of years to complete. Ubisoft Singapore is expected to be involved in the development to some degree, although it is unclear if they are leading the project. Currently, Ubisoft Singapore is the lead studio for Skull and Bones. It should be noted that Ubisoft Singapore has contributed to every main Assassin's Creed title since AC2, often working on key gameplay features, such as the naval combat in Assassin's Creed 3.
Fans will have to wait for years before receiving any official information, but there is speculation that Ubisoft Singapore may utilize their ocean technology showcased in Skull and Bones to enhance the naval combat in AC Black Flag. It is worth noting that the concept for Skull and Bones originated from the success of AC: Black Flag, similar to how a bug in AC Odyssey led to the creation of Immortals Fenyx Rising. It all comes full circle.
Naturally, this news has left some fans wondering about the future of Skull and Bones. The game has faced numerous delays and currently lacks a release date, although a beta for Skull and Bones is in the works.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is available natively on PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.
