Firaxis has been incredibly busy in recent years. In 2016, they released two highly anticipated sequels, XCOM 2 and Civilization 6. Since then, they have continued to support both games with expansions and updates. In addition, they released Marvel's Midnight Suns last year. Despite their already packed schedule, Firaxis shows no signs of slowing down, as they are currently working on Civilization 7. Although there hasn't been much news about the game yet, it is expected that fans may have to wait until at least 2024 for any significant updates.
Why Fans Will Be Waiting Some Time For Civilization 7
The Civilization franchise stands out for its relaxed approach to announcements, unlike many other beloved series in the video game industry. Typically, new franchise entries are unveiled at major events like E3 or the Game Awards, but Firaxis' Civilization series has often taken a different path. This makes predicting the marketing strategy for Civilization 7 challenging.
Firaxis' first venture into the Civilization series was Civilization 3, which was announced in an interview in April 2000. The game was released a year and a half later in October 2001. It's worth noting that Civilization 3 had already been in development for six months at the time of its announcement. Additionally, video game development in 2000 was less demanding compared to the present day. Similarly, in December 2003, Firaxis announced the development of Civilization 4, and the game was released in October 2005 after approximately two years of development.
The marketing approach for the Civilization franchise underwent a significant change with the release of Civilization 5. Unlike its predecessors, Civilization 5 received a proper reveal and announcement trailer during Firaxis' tenure with the series. This shift in marketing strategy was replicated with the release of Civilization 6, which followed a similar pattern, with an early announcement in 2016 and a release later that year.
However, Civilization 7 reverted to the franchise's unconventional marketing style, as it was announced through a simple post on the official Civilization Twitter page. No specific release date has been disclosed, leading us to believe that Civilization 7 is still in its early stages of development. Considering that it took four years to develop Civilization 5, it is likely that Civilization 7 is still a long way off. Furthermore, the past few years have seen Firaxis primarily focusing on the development of Marvel's Midnight Suns and its DLC, further delaying the release of Civilization 7. Regrettably, it appears highly improbable that fans will receive any updates on Civilization 7 in the near future, with the earliest potential appearance being next year.
