On Thursday, October 5, 2023, CJ Projekt Red, a game development studio, hinted at further collaboration with Studio Trigger, creators of the highly popular Cyberpunk anime series titled Edgerunners. The anime, released as a Netflix original, received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans of both the game and anime enthusiasts.
The Cyberpunk anime was based on the video game Cyberpunk 2077, initially released in December 2020 to mixed reviews from critics and players. However, over time, the game's issues were addressed through updates and patches, gradually improving public opinion.
Additional Cyberpunk anime projects seemingly teased but not set to be Edgerunners season 2
The Cyberpunk anime series not only enhanced the game's reception but also enticed those who were introduced to the franchise through the anime to venture into the original video game. During an investor presentation on Thursday, chief commercial officer Michał Nowakowski announced that there are significant plans to expand the Cyberpunk franchise beyond the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, known as Project Orion. One of these plans includes the development of a live-action project based on the game, which is currently in its early stages of development.
Nowakowski explained that the success of the Cyberpunk anime series, Edgerunners, has fueled the desire to further expand the franchise. However, he clarified that there are currently no plans for a second season of the show. Nevertheless, Nowakowski expressed his personal interest in continuing to collaborate with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future. He attributed this desire to the positive feedback received for the Edgerunners anime series.

In addition, CD Projekt Red has made it clear that they have no intention of continuing the project and there were never any plans to do so. Instead of abruptly cancelling a second season, they have expressed the possibility of future anime projects being a continuation of the series or an entirely new venture. This decision stems from the fact that Edgerunners was originally conceived as a standalone undertaking, possibly due to uncertainties about its potential success.
Regardless, it is evident that the game development studio has significant aspirations to further enlarge and evolve their franchise beyond the realm of video games. This expansion may lead to the creation of more Cyberpunk anime series, although it is also possible that Edgerunners could eventually emerge as the sole representative in that aspect.
