Blizzard is revamping the PvP ranking system in World of Warcraft Classic, bringing several adjustments that include the elimination of rank points. This marks the most significant change to the game's PvP since its release, impacting coveted rewards like the Grand Marshal title and unique mounts.
While PvE content has taken priority over PvP in recent iterations of World of Warcraft, many fans have remained dedicated to the PvP aspect since the game's original launch in 2004. The Dragonflight version of the game, as well as the various Classic clients, have cultivated strong PvP communities. In the past, the classic PvP system in World of Warcraft locked out many players due to the significant time investment required. However, these recent changes may pique the interest of fans who previously dismissed arenas and battlegrounds.
Blizzard recently announced significant changes to the World of Warcraft Classic PvP system in a recent blue post that compared the old approach with the new changes. In the upcoming update, World of Warcraft Classic Ranking Points will be eliminated, and contribution points will take on a more prominent role. These contribution points will be calculated during weekly server maintenance and will serve as a measure of a player's seasonal PvP standing going forward. Similar to the previous method, these contribution points can decay if a World of Warcraft Classic player becomes inactive. However, unlike before, the decay will not continue indefinitely, as Blizzard has established a baseline number for each rank. Demotions will now only occur as a result of dishonorable kills.
The new World of Warcraft Classic PvP ranking system puts a greater emphasis on honor milestones, requiring players to achieve a specific number of honorable kills in order to rank up. While both honorable and dishonorable kills have always been important in PvP ranking, Blizzard aims to reduce the amount of time players need to invest in "high levels of play" to upgrade their status. Rather than focusing on rivalries or boosting within factions, the new system renews the focus on Alliance versus Horde. These changes may particularly appeal to casual fans who still enjoy collecting honorable kills. Although the adjustments have already been implemented in a World of Warcraft public test realm, it remains uncertain when the new system will replace the old one on live servers.
World of Warcraft Classic is available now for Mac and PC.
