These changes may have impacted its success, which fell short of expectations.
The fate of the Immortals Fenyx Rising franchise remains uncertain as Ubisoft focuses on its major franchises. Unfortunately, it seems that a sequel for the action-adventure game has been canceled, disappointing fans. Despite not meeting Ubisoft's expectations, Immortals Fenyx Rising provided an enjoyable, action-filled adventure with evident inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, Ubisoft's priorities have shifted towards more appealing opportunities such as Assassin's Creed.
Immortals Fenyx Rising, originally known as Gods and Monsters, was unveiled at E3 2019. Initially, it bore strong resemblances to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, boasting a mythical and uplifting ambiance. In 2020, the game underwent a significant overhaul and was rebranded as Immortals Fenyx Rising. This resulted in a more relaxed and action-oriented gameplay experience, accompanied by heightened humor and more visually striking combat. These changes left many wondering if it was an entirely different game, potentially contributing to its lackluster performance.
Despite not achieving immediate success, Immortals Fenyx Rising was seen by many as the inception of a potentially thrilling franchise. However, recent reports from VGC indicate that Ubisoft's leadership discontinued the early development of a sequel to the game. The decision was made due to "challenges around establishing the IP."
In a strategic move, Ubisoft announced in January that it would be reallocating its development resources towards its major brands such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and the various Tom Clancy shooters. Alongside the previously disclosed cancelation of four projects in mid-2022, three additional unannounced projects were confirmed to be canceled. It seems that Ubisoft also does not have any future plans for the Immortals Fenyx Rising franchise.
Ubisoft has announced an array of projects, including the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage and a new Prince of Persia game. Additionally, they are developing eleven Assassin's Creed games, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Tom Clancy's The Division Resurgence, and Star Wars Outlaws. Given the magnitude of these projects, it is understandable that Immortals Fenyx Rising was considered less of a priority.
Even if a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising is still in the works, it is likely to be a significantly long time before its release. Currently, Ubisoft Quebec is focused on developing Assassin's Creed: Codename Red, which is set in Japan. This game is expected to release many years from now, indicating that Ubisoft Quebec will not have the bandwidth for another project for quite some time. Perhaps once Assassin's Creed: Codename Red is released, Ubisoft will be more receptive to continuing the Immortals Fenyx Rising franchise.
Immortals Fenyx Rising is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
