New Call of Duty games may potentially be included on day one in the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, starting with the 2025 release. In recent years, Microsoft has acquired studios in order to secure exclusive titles for Xbox, but more importantly, to ensure the availability of day one games for Xbox Game Pass.
Given that Call of Duty has consistently been the top-selling game for nearly two decades, it makes sense that having it as a day one title would be a significant advantage for Xbox Game Pass. This franchise has the potential to attract numerous new subscribers to the service, which is undoubtedly one of the main reasons why Microsoft is interested in acquiring Activision Blizzard King in the first place, along with the additional mobile content provided by King.
Following a favorable ruling in Microsoft's Activision acquisition, fans are eager to know when they can anticipate the release of a new Call of Duty game on Xbox Game Pass on its launch day. However, those hoping for this to occur with the 2023 installment will be disappointed. Due to an existing agreement between Activision and Sony, it is likely that the first Call of Duty game to debut on Xbox Game Pass on its release day will be the 2025 edition. Presently, there is no information available regarding this project. Nonetheless, based on the established pattern, it is highly probable that the 2025 Call of Duty game will be developed by Infinity Ward, the studio behind Modern Warfare.
Hence, even if Microsoft acquires Activision as anticipated, fans should not expect to play the 2023 or 2024 Call of Duty games developed by Treyarch through the Xbox Game Pass service on their release day. On a positive note, Microsoft's acquisition should result in all the earlier Call of Duty games becoming available on Xbox Game Pass, which is particularly exciting considering many of them are compatible with previous console versions.
Most main series Call of Duty games can be played on Xbox One and Series X consoles through the backward compatibility program, with the exception of the original Call of Duty. Considering that classic titles like Black Ops 2 are still sold for $50, the inclusion of these games on Game Pass is significant. Therefore, Xbox Game Pass subscribers may have to wait until 2025 for new Call of Duty games to be available as day one Game Pass games, but they can expect to enjoy the older CoD games shortly after the deal is completed.
