Summary
The future of The Boys franchise, including potential spinoffs, is in the hands of showrunner Eric Kripke, according to Amazon executive Vernon Sanders.
Kripke envisions a long-term future for the franchise and ongoing discussions with Amazon are focused on what lies ahead. The introduction of Gen V, the inaugural live-action spinoff, opens up possibilities for a shared universe reminiscent of the Arrowverse, paving the way for additional spinoffs and cross collaborations down the line.
Amazon executive Vernon Sanders addressed the potential for more spinoffs of The Boys following the premiere of Gen V on September 29. Gen V will be the first live-action spinoff of the show and will feature appearances by the mainline show's stars, focusing on the dark events at Vought's college for supes. In addition, the series will lay the groundwork for The Boys season 4, which follows a group of vigilantes fighting against corrupt superheroes employed by Vought. With the unique direction offered by The Boys Presents: Diabolical and Gen V, the possibility of more spinoffs seems likely.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sanders discussed the future of The Boys. He explained that although he is the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, the decision-making power regarding the franchise lies with showrunner Eric Kripke rather than the studio. Sanders hinted that Kripke has a plan in mind for future spinoffs, but it may not be revealed until after the release of The Boys season 4 and Gen V. See his statement below:
I will say this: Eric [Kripke] has had a vision for the future of this project for years now, and we have been engaged in an ongoing discussion about what lies ahead. So, beyond expressing our belief in Eric, it is premature to delve into the specifics. However, if Eric is eager to continue the narrative, we will eagerly collaborate with him on shaping it. For now, our primary focus is on Gen V and an extraordinary fourth season of The Boys that I believe will astound fans. I genuinely believe that Seth, Evan, and Eric share this enthusiasm. We have been cautious not to overexpose ourselves, as we were determined to prioritize the release of Gen V. Once it hits the audiences and their reactions become evident, we can then embark on conversations about, as I mentioned earlier, our future endeavors.
Will The Boys' Universe Continue Expanding?
Understandably, Kripke and Amazon are prioritizing the new seasons of The Boys and Gen V before divulging any information about the franchise's future. Given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes, it will require extra efforts to spread the word without the involvement of the show's actors. Nevertheless, Sanders' statement remains promising, hinting that Kripke may have grander plans for the franchise beyond just Gen V. Indeed, the introduction of the first live-action spinoff could lay the groundwork for The Boys' shared universe.
Gen V and The Boys exist in the same universe and will have some character crossovers. This could potentially lead to the creation of a TV universe similar to the Arrowverse, which started with Arrow and expanded to six interconnected shows. The Boys also has another spinoff called The Boys Presents: Diabolical, an animated series with three canon episodes according to Kripke. Furthermore, there are possibilities for future spinoffs, including solo shows for popular characters like Billy Butcher, Kimiko, and A-Train.
For now, there is no rush to establish the shared universe. The Boys still has two more seasons in development, and Gen V might also have future seasons. Therefore, the franchise will continue to produce new content for a while. However, wrapping up The Boys neatly may prove challenging due to the complex layers of corruption within Vought and numerous character subplots. Nevertheless, the expansive premise of The Boys and the introduction of Gen V suggest an exciting future for the franchise.
Gen V begins streaming on Prime Video on September 29.
