Hideo Kojima revealed his latest game, OD, last week, and the teaser trailer left viewers with more questions than answers. The Death Stranding director also included a possible reference to his canceled Konami project Silent Hills, as noticed by Central Xbox and backed up by VGC. In the trailer, letters briefly appear in the mouth of actor Udo Kier, spelling out "Atami," the name of a seaside city in the Shizuoka Prefecture. Reportedly, this is where the Silent Hills reference comes into play, as Shizuoka can be separated and translated to Silent Hill in Kanji.
It's a mystery why Kojima would reference the canceled project - if that is indeed the reason behind this. Perhaps it's a more direct indication of one of the locations for OD instead? Back in 2015, Konami infamously cancelled Silent Hills, which was part of a messy split between the video game company and Kojima.
OD was officially announced at The Game Awards last week, with Kojima revealing his partnership with Get Out filmmaker Jordan Peele on the Xbox Game Studios title. The game will also feature Kier, Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and Sophia Lillis (It, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).
It was one of the biggest announcements at The Game Awards this year.

As a hard fan of Hideo Kojima, I am thrilled to see him referencing his ill-fated Konami project Silent Hills in his latest game, OD. The Easter egg found in the trailer, with the letters "Atami" appearing in the mouth of actor Udo Kier, is a clever nod to the canceled project. It's a mystery why Kojima would reference the canceled project, but it could be a more direct indication of one of the locations for OD instead. Either way, it's exciting to see Kojima paying homage to his previous work and keeping the spirit of Silent Hills alive.
The announcement of OD at The Game Awards was one of the biggest surprises of the night. The partnership between Kojima and Jordan Peele is an exciting one, and the cast, including Udo Kier, Hunter Schafer, and Sophia Lillis, is incredibly talented. I can't wait to see more of OD and learn more about the game's story and gameplay. Kojima is known for his innovative and thought-provoking games, and I have no doubt that OD will be another masterpiece.
