Check out this new fan poster on Instagram that envisions an epic battle between the Avengers and X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With over 33 movies and 9 shows, mutants have yet to be officially introduced in the MCU. However, there have been subtle hints in Phase 4 and 5 titles, like Ms. Marvel alluding to Kamala Khan's dormant mutation and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirming Namor's mutant origin. Additionally, if we consider X-Men characters from different universes, we already have mutants like Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart), Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman), and Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) in the MCU.
This idea of pitting the MCU Avengers against the multiversal X-Men mutants has gained immense popularity. A talented digital artist named ArtOfTimeTravel recently shared a fan poster on Instagram, inspired by the cover of Avengers vs. X-Men Vol 1 #1 comic book. The poster showcases both teams facing off, fully prepared for battle. In addition to the established mutants from the previous X-Men movies, such as Cyclops (played by James Marsden) and Magik (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) from New Mutants, the fan poster also includes Namor from the MCU, who could potentially align himself with his fellow mutants. Another exciting addition is Gambit (portrayed by Channing Tatum), whose standalone X-Men movie unfortunately got canceled before he could make his appearance on screen. Take a look at the fan poster below.
What We Know About The X-Men's MCU Introduction
Marvel Studios' search for MCU X-Men movie writers in September 2023 indicates the forthcoming introduction of mutants in the franchise. As the Multiverse Saga unfolds, there is a possibility that the studio will wait for Avengers: Secret Wars to provide a definitive conclusion to the Multiverse Saga before prioritizing mutants. It is likely that Phase 7 will finally bring the spotlight to MCU mutants, possibly leading up to an epic event akin to Marvel Comics' Avengers vs. X-Men.
Marvel fans can rejoice as they won't have to wait until Phase 7 for the X-Men to join the MCU. The introduction of mutant-centric movies in the MCU is finally on the horizon with Phase 5's Deadpool 3. This highly anticipated film will bring together Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, merging them into the same universe as the Avengers. Although these characters originate from a different reality, their collaboration sets the stage for a future crossover between the X-Men and the Avengers. Additionally, if other mutants from Fox's X-Men universe join this crossover, the possibility of a grand multiversal team-up in Avengers: Secret Wars becomes even more likely.
Marvel Studios is in a good position to bring back standout X-Men actors from Fox's movies, as well as those who didn't get a chance to shine. Some of them may even continue in the MCU after the Multiverse Saga, potentially joining the new X-Men team as mentors. However, the first official X-Men movie from Marvel Studios will likely focus solely on the native mutants of the MCU, who are well-suited to be the protagonists of their own saga. Whether it's an X-Men movie, a solo mutant title, or the debut of a different mutant team, production will likely commence after the current overarching storyline of the MCU has reached its climax.
Now that Disney owns the rights to the X-Men, the MCU's depiction of Marvel's mutants is no longer burdened by the logistical limitations that Fox faced. The MCU's X-Men will have the freedom to confront villains who are not exclusively associated with the X-Men in the comics. Moreover, there will be possibilities for interactions between mutants and a wide range of Marvel characters, such as battles between Rogue and Captain Marvel, or Beast and Wolverine joining forces with the Avengers. Most significantly, live-action adaptations of major crossover events like Avengers vs. X-Men or House of M can now include a variety of characters, including X-Men, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other teams and characters from the MCU.
