Southampton marked their return to the Championship with a triumphant win, courtesy of Che Adams' late goal, securing a 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday in the season-opening match on Friday evening.
Under the guidance of new manager Russell Martin, the team had James Ward-Prowse leading them as captain, and their campaign began on a positive note with Adam Armstrong giving them an early lead.
Sheffield Wednesday, under new boss Xisco Munoz after the departure of Darren Moore in the summer, hit back after the break through Lee Gregory.
Adams then came off the bench to score the winner for the Saints in the closing stages.
Southampton strike late to earn curtain-raising win
Southampton had a flawless beginning upon their return to the Championship after an absence of 11 years.
In just eight minutes, Nathan Tella, a prominent player in Burnley's promotion campaign last season, showcased his exceptional skill. From the right side, he skillfully maneuvered and unleashed a bending shot that deflected off Armstrong's head, resulting in a goal.
Southampton showcased their dominance, but they soon realized in the second half that the challenges at this level are not always uncomplicated. In the 54th minute, Wednesday leveled the playing field as Gregory swiftly capitalized on a corner opportunity, nudging the ball in from a short distance.
However, a surprising turn of events unfolded at Hillsborough when Southampton managed to break through in the 87th minute. Ward-Prowse successfully located Adams in the penalty area, and with composure, Adams skillfully found the back of the net.
The managers
Southampton's Russell Martin Reflects on the Team's Performance:"I take immense pride in the players' efforts. Despite facing a challenging start at a venue where they excelled last season, albeit in a different league, our arrival here was no mean feat. There has been a whirlwind of external factors beyond our control, creating a lot of commotion, but the players have admirably handled the situation. Their exemplary display on the field tonight fills me with great pride."
The first game presented a substantial challenge for them, serving as a significant test. Their display of bravery and the sense of pride they exhibited in their actions, particularly towards the conclusion of the game, was truly remarkable. I am immensely grateful for their efforts, and it brings me great satisfaction to have secured a victory in front of the considerable number of supporters that showed up tonight.
While there is still much work to be done and ample room for improvement, I hope that this outcome clearly demonstrates to both the supporters and the players the nature of the team we will become this season.
