Donald Trump Takes Legal Action Against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos for Defamation Following Nancy Mace Interview

Former President Donald Trump initiates legal proceedings against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos for defamation after contentious statements made during an interview with Nancy Mace.

Former President Donald Trump has filed another lawsuit against the news media, this time targeting ABC News and George Stephanopoulos. The lawsuit accuses them of defamation following statements made by the anchor in a contentious interview.

During an episode of “This Week,” Stephanopoulos interviewed Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who is a rape survivor. Stephanopoulos questioned Mace about her ongoing support for Trump despite a jury's ruling that he sexually assaulted writer E. Jean Carroll in 1996, resulting in an $88 million judgment for battery and defamation. Stephanopoulos repeatedly stated in the interview that Trump had "raped" Carroll.

Stephanopoulos questioned Mace about her endorsement of Donald Trump despite his legal troubles. Mace was asked how she could support Trump after he was found liable for rape and defaming the victim.

Mace defended her decision, pointing out that the cases were civil, not criminal. She expressed that she lives with shame and felt that the question was an attempt to shame her as a rape survivor for her political choices.

Last year, a Manhattan federal jury found that Trump had sexually abused Carroll, which was enough to hold him liable for battery. However, the jury did not find enough evidence to prove that he had raped her. Despite this, months later, the judge in the case dismissed a countersuit and concluded that the claim of Trump raping Carroll was "substantially true."

Judge Lewis Kaplan stated that the jury's verdict in Carroll II established the fact that Trump had "raped her," although it was digitally and not with his penis. Therefore, it was determined that the substantial truth of Carroll's rape accusations was established against him.

Trump filed a lawsuit in federal court in the Southern District of Florida, alleging that Stephanopoulos made false, intentional, malicious statements intended to cause harm.

ABC News did not offer a comment through their representative immediately.

However, Trump has a habit of criticizing the press and has a history of filing lawsuits against the news media that lack merit. In a recent case, he had to pay $392,000 in attorney fees to The New York Times after an unsuccessful lawsuit against the newspaper.
