Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's upcoming release will include updates and new content for its single-player, multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone modes.
The unique and customizable experience that the popular DMZ mode aimed to provide seems to have been abandoned, with no plans for updates or changes in the future. DMZ fans are left disappointed and uncertain about its future, as it appears that the gameplay elements of DMZ have been integrated into the Zombies mode of Modern Warfare 3.
The upcoming installment in the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 3, has the challenging task of maintaining the extensive content from its predecessor while also incorporating elements from the popular Warzone franchise. Recently, fans were provided with a wealth of information about the game's release through the Call of Duty Next presentation, which offered detailed plans for its single-player, multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone features.
With this recent news generating various discussions about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, it is possible to overlook certain multiplayer experiences that seem to have been excluded from Activision's future plans. One mode in particular, DMZ, which once showcased great ambition and potential longevity, may have been quietly discontinued with the announcement of Call of Duty Next.
Call of Duty Next: A Lack of Updates For Modern Warfare 3's DMZ
The introduction of DMZ alongside the release of Warzone 2 in 2022 aimed to bring a fresh twist to the battle royale gameplay. Inspired by popular extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov, DMZ allowed players to customize their playstyle and objectives across various Warzone maps. Completing objectives and extracting with valuable loot allowed players to purchase upgrades, creating an addictive and replayable experience.
However, the recent plans for Modern Warfare 3, outlined at the Call of Duty Next presentation, raise concerns for the future of DMZ. The focus of CoD Next was on the core multiplayer and Zombies mode of MW3, as well as upcoming changes to the main Warzone experience, including a new map. Unfortunately, for fans of DMZ, the presentation confirmed that no changes or updates are planned for it. The game mode will remain tethered to Modern Warfare 2 moving forward.
Concerns about Modern Warfare 3 as a direct continuation of MW2 are heightened by the fact that the upcoming game carries over a lot of the progress from its predecessor. Since DMZ hasn't been updated to match MW3, it's unlikely to receive sufficient support as all attention shifts to the franchise's next title in November.
Interestingly, it appears that the bold Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 3 will take over the extraction gameplay from DMZ. With MW3's Zombies offering its own open-world experience, players are confirmed to have the option to extract from the map with their perks and weapons, saving them for future use. Since this is the main appeal of DMZ, it seems that the mode is no longer a priority for Activision.
It appears that the DMZ will not receive an update for Warzone's upcoming Urzikstan map, causing the mode to likely fade into obscurity in the coming months. This is frustrating for dedicated fans, but it may be a consequence of Call of Duty's annual content being spread thin across its increasing number of game modes. With DMZ not continuing in Warzone's new experiences and Zombies incorporating its core game mechanic, the mode suffered a significant setback during Call of Duty Next.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
