The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the details of its upcoming spring exhibition in 2024, which will provide the inspiration for the theme of the corresponding Met Gala. Unlike the previous three years, which focused on specific themes such as Karl Lagerfeld's career, the opulence of the Gilded Age, and American fashion as a whole, next year's Met Gala, taking place on May 6, will delve into more abstract concepts surrounding fashion history, nature, technology, and the senses.
Titled "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," this exhibition will be showcased at the Costume Institute in New York from May 10 to September 2, 2024. The press release states that it will feature rare "masterworks" from the Institute's archives, providing museum visitors with a unique and imaginative experience.
The Met Gala 2023 will showcase the most stunning looks from the red carpet. Utilizing advanced technology such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, X-rays, animations, and soundscapes, the exhibit will transform the sensory elements of historical and iconic contemporary fashion pieces that are no longer wearable. Included in the display will be a breathtaking ball gown from House of Worth, an elegant evening dress from the World War II era by Madeleine Vionnet, as well as archival creations from Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, and Alexander McQueen.

"When an article of clothing becomes a part of our collection, it undergoes a permanent transformation in its significance. What was once an integral aspect of someone's lived existence now stands as a static piece of art, devoid of the ability to be worn, heard, touched, or smelled," stated Andrew Bolton, the curator at the Institute. "Through an inclusive approach encompassing the full spectrum of human senses, the exhibition strives to revive the original essence of the showcased creations - their vibrancy, dynamism, and, above all, their vitality."
The artworks in the exhibitions will be linked by their associations with nature, delving into the themes of "rebirth and renewal," as stated in the press release. The gallery spaces will undergo an enchanting metamorphosis with floral patterns and insects reminiscent of Elizabethan-era embroidery adorning one room's walls, while the floors of another room will pulsate with animated snakes inspired by the neckline of an early 20th-century sequined gown.

The Institute will display garments too delicate for mannequins as "sleeping beauties" in coffin-like glass displays, allowing viewers to observe their deterioration using microscopes. To showcase the fashions' original state, the illusion technique "Pepper's ghost," commonly used in theater, will be employed. Contrary to rumors, Kim Kardashian was not responsible for any damage to Marilyn Monroe's dress, as confirmed by Ripleys.
However, the challenge lies in how celebrities will interpret a more abstract and nuanced theme on the red carpet of the Met Gala, especially when it revolves around garments that are no longer worn. Guests may find inspiration in historical gowns by giving them a fresh interpretation. Some may embrace technology, like Karolina Kurkova did in 2016 with her Marchesa gown that featured LED lighting responsive to social media posts. Others may focus on the concept of transformation, similar to Blake Lively's breathtaking Ralph Lauren design in 2022, which drew inspiration from the Statue of Liberty and transformed from bronze to a green patina.
Regardless of their approach, it is essential that if celebrities delve into the archives to revive iconic "sleeping beauty" gowns, they handle these pieces with the same level of care and reverence as the exhibition itself.
