The theme for the 2024 Met Gala has been unveiled. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the concept for next year's Costume Institute exhibition, set to premiere alongside the annual ball, as "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" on Wednesday, November 8.
The exhibition, titled after The Met's collection of rarely seen artifacts, promises a completely fresh and unique display, according to Vogue. Max Hollein, The Met's Marina Kellen French director and CEO, described the show as groundbreaking, pushing the limits of our imagination and offering a multi-faceted experience, enabling us to delve into the history and ultimately gain a profound admiration for its beauty.
Included in the showcase will be iconic creations from renowned designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and many others spanning over a century.
Wendy Yu, the curator in charge of The Costume Institute, said she hopes the theme will “activate” a “sensorial appreciation of fashion.”
According to Vogue, Yu stated that fashion, being closely linked to the body, is a highly emotive art form filled with memories and emotions, which we relate to through our senses.
The 2024 gala will be held on the initial Monday of May and will be supported by TikTok, Loewe, and Vogue. The showcase will be open from May 10 to September 2, 2024. The previous year's event was titled "Karl Lagerfeld: A line of Beauty" and celebrated the influential German fashion designer, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85.
"Initiating the design process, sketches pave the way," tweeted the official Met Museum account, accompanied by a video showcasing Lagerfeld in action. "Embark on a journey to unravel Karl Lagerfeld's artistic approach and distinctive style in 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,' debuting at the Met's #CostumeInstitute in May 2023."
Esteemed personalities from Hollywood, such as Cardi B and Kim Kardashian, graced the invite-only occasion.

Cardi appeared as a gothic bouquet as she graced the iconic steps wearing a black bubble gown from Chenpeng Studio. The floor-length design featured protruding roses and a pearl-covered corset. With silver hair, the Grammy winner complemented the ensemble with a sleeveless button-up and a black velvet tie.
On the other hand, Kardashian covered her curves with 50,000 pearls in a custom Schiaparelli dress. This look was reminiscent of the reality television star's 2007 Playboy shoot, where she posed nude and was adorned solely with the sparkling gemstones.
Kardashian caused a stir at the 2022 Met Gala with her choice of outfit. She appeared at the 2023 celebration, making headlines for her decision to wear Marilyn Monroe's famous "Happy Birthday Mr. President" dress, originally designed by Bob Mackie. This iconic dress was worn by Monroe herself in 1962 when she serenaded President John F. Kennedy.
