Dean McDermott openly discussed his path to sobriety since his split from Tori Spelling, expressing gratitude for the progress he has made. In an Instagram video recorded in his car on Thursday, November 16, McDermott cheerfully announced that it was his birthday and playfully requested birthday wishes. He mentioned that he was enjoying a wonderful day, emphasizing his sobriety, good health, and overall positive mindset.
McDermott shared that he recently had a conversation with his sister who shared some wise words with him regarding growing older. Reflecting on their conversation, he recounted her advice, stating, "She reminded me that age is just a number and not everyone has the privilege of growing old." McDermott found her insight to be truly profound and encouraged others to embrace their life experiences with pride, comparing it to wearing a badge of honor.
Continuing to embrace his positive outlook on his birthday, McDermott expressed his enthusiasm in a heartfelt caption, exclaiming, "Yes! Today, I celebrate turning 57 and I couldn't be happier! I am embracing sobriety and loving every moment of life!" He concluded his post with hashtags to convey his joy, including "Happy Birthday," "Love Life," "Change," and "Happy."
McDermott revealed his struggle with sobriety in an open and honest interview with the Daily Mail earlier this month. During the conversation, McDermott acknowledged that his battle with substance abuse was the main reason for his separation from Spelling, who is 50 years old.
"I turned to alcohol as a way to cope and feel better. At first, it seemed to work, but eventually it led to me feeling isolated and disconnected," he shared with the publication. "It got to the point where I was consuming a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and taking a handful of prescription medications alone, despite having a loving family in the next room."

He stated that those events ultimately resulted in their broken relationship and the strain between him and Tori. The overwhelming frustration and constant arguments became too much for him to handle. McDermott acknowledged that during this difficult time, Spelling provided him with unwavering support and urged him to seek professional help.
McDermott revealed in June that his marriage to Spelling had come to an end after 17 years, but he later deleted the announcement. Speaking to the Daily Mail, McDermott confessed that he reached a breaking point when he decided to share the breakup statement.
"I was completely overwhelmed. That evening, I had been drinking and taking medication," McDermott recounted. "After posting, I consumed even more pills, taking six or seven Ambien in the hope that I wouldn't wake up."

McDermott has completed a 40-day program at an inpatient treatment facility and is currently residing in a residence for men recovering from addiction. He has stated that he has not had the opportunity to see Spelling or his children since leaving rehab. McDermott and Spelling have five children together, named Liam, Finn, Beau, Stella, and Hattie. McDermott also has a son named Jack, who is 25 and shares with his ex-wife Mary Jo Eustace.
