The Marsh King's Daughter had a disappointing opening weekend at the box office.
Despite being helmed by Neil Burger, the director of Divergent, and featuring the talented Daisy Ridley, the film's performance at the local box office fell short of expectations. In a disappointing turnout, it garnered a meager $849,000 across 1,055 theaters, failing to secure a spot on the coveted Top 10 chart.
The Marsh King's Daughter had a disappointing opening weekend in the US box office. Despite being based on the popular 2017 Karen Dionne book and directed by Neil Burger, the film failed to make an impact. Starring Daisy Ridley as Helena Pelletier, a young woman fighting to protect her daughter from her abusive survivalist father who has escaped from prison, the movie struggled to generate revenue. According to Deadline, this weekend was one of the lowest-grossing so far this year. The top three films, Five Nights at Freddy's, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and Killers of the Flower Moon, were all holdovers, while new releases Priscilla and What Happens Later claimed the fourth and ninth spots respectively. Unfortunately, The Marsh King's Daughter didn't even make it onto the charts, earning a mere $849,000 across 1,055 theaters.
Why The Marsh King's Daughter Isn't a Box Office Draw Despite a Stacked Cast
One interesting aspect of The Marsh King's Daughter's underwhelming performance at the box office is its remarkable ensemble. Ridley, renowned for her role in the recent Star Wars trilogy, shares the screen with another Star Wars veteran, Ben Mendelsohn of Rogue One, who also graces the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Skrull Talos. Joining them are a talented cast featuring Garrett Hedlund (known for Friday Night Lights and Tron: Legacy), Brooklynn Prince (acclaimed for The Florida Project), and Gil Birmingham (recognized for Twilight and Yellowstone).
Talos has made appearances in various Marvel titles, including Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Secret Invasion.
The cast has primarily excelled in ensemble roles for IP-driven projects, despite their appearances in notable arthouse films and major franchise installments. Although Ridley is a well-known actress, her box office appeal outside of franchises like Star Wars, Peter Rabbit, and Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot movies has been minimal. Interestingly, her highest-grossing non-franchise film was Chaos Walking in 2021, which only made $27.1 million against its $100 million budget.
While The Marsh King's Daughter did not have as wide of a release as the other movies on the chart (the top 3 films played in over 3,000 theaters), the other new releases that made the chart had a similar number of theater showings. Additionally, they benefited from the delay of Dune: Part Two's release, which was originally scheduled for the same weekend due to an ongoing actors strike. It remains uncertain if Ridley can successfully lead a film independent of a larger franchise, and at present, it appears that this particular title is not forging new ground.

As an Daisy Ridley fan, I'm disappointed to hear that her latest film, 'The Marsh King's Daughter,' failed to make a million and missed the box office Top 10. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, as I'm a big fan of Daisy's work. I'm not sure why the movie didn't do well at the box office, but I'm hoping that it will find an audience on streaming platforms.
Daisy Ridley is a talented actress, and I believe that she has the potential to be a big star. However, she needs to find the right projects to showcase her talents. I'm hoping that she will be able to find more success in her future endeavors. Despite the disappointing box office performance of 'The Marsh King's Daughter,' I'm still a big fan of Daisy Ridley and I'm excited to see what she does next.
