CD Projekt Red's latest report reveals that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC has already achieved impressive sales figures. Despite its lackluster launch in 2020, the developer's continuous efforts in enhancing the game have proven to be fruitful, and the release of the highly anticipated Phantom Liberty DLC has further boosted its popularity. The game has undergone numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements over the years, but it was the Cyberpunk 2077 next-gen update that brought significant enhancements to the overall gameplay, resulting in a regained fanbase. With subsequent updates and the official announcement of the expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2022, Phantom Liberty has emerged as a major success for CDPR, as evident just a week after its launch.
In the most recent earnings call, CDPR announced that Phantom Liberty sold more than 3 million copies in its first week of release. PC sales accounted for approximately 2.04 million copies (68%), followed by 0.6 million on PS5 and 0.39 million on Xbox Series X/S. The studio also shared that the total sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have exceeded 25 million copies to date, while CDPR itself has surpassed 100 million copies across all its titles, including The Witcher trilogy. According to the company's initial data, Phantom Liberty incurred production costs of 275 million PLN (~$62.8 million) and marketing expenses of 95 million PLN (~$21.7 million).
CDPR has provided an update on Project Orion, one of their upcoming titles. Game director Gabe Amatangelo revealed that his team is now shifting their focus to the sequel of Cyberpunk 2077. According to the latest earnings call, Project Orion is currently in the conceptualization stage and is being developed by the CD PROJEKT RED North America studio with support from the Polish arm. Additionally, CDPR has announced a collaboration with Anonymous Content to create a live-action project based on Cyberpunk 2077.
However, it's important to note that the Polish gaming company has faced some challenges. In July, they announced the layoff of 100 CDPR staff, which accounts for about 9% of their workforce. Despite this, the studio still has five projects in active development, and it remains to be seen how the future of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher will unfold. However, if the launch of Phantom Liberty is any indication, fans can have hope for what CDPR has in store in the coming years.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
