Criticism Mounts Over Timothée Chalamet's Controversial SNL Skit and Hamas Joke

Timothee Chalamet receives heavy criticism for his SNL skit as viewers express outrage over his offensive joke targeting Hamas

Timothee Chalamet is receiving criticism for his recent hosting of Saturday Night Live, as viewers are condemning his offensive Hamas joke. During the November 11 episode, the Wonka actor sang a rendition of 'Pure Imagination' and took a swipe at actors being able to engage in "shameless self-promotion" following the SAG-AFTRA strike.

While Chalamet effectively promoted his upcoming film as the main character who is a chocolate maker, he also seized the opportunity to humorously mention Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" and the potential sequel to "Dune." An additional reference to AI was thrown in as well. However, amidst the overall positive reception of Chalamet's skits, one particular segment has sparked outrage on the internet.

Timothee Chalamet’s “disgusting” SNL skit criticized for Hamas joke

In Please Don’t Destroy's skit, Chalamet takes on the role of a character contemplating suicide by leaping off a rooftop. However, the comedy troupe intervenes, urging him to reconsider and questioning his attachments to anything in life.

“I suppose it's my music," Chalamet replies. Despite his tunes not being exceptional, they decide to distribute his music in order to persuade him to continue living. When they inquire about his Instagram username, Chalamet's character discloses: "It's Hamas, H-a-m-a-s."

"Yeah, man, I'm not going to post a song by Hamas on Instagram," Martin Herlihy states. This joke has received negative reactions from certain individuals who are upset that SNL used the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict as comedic material.

Expressing their discontent on X/Twitter, one person wrote: "Making jokes about an ongoing genocide? When lives are currently being lost every second of every day? It's absolutely repulsive. These individuals are twisted. Timothée Chalamet and SNL can go to hell."

Another person expressed their disgust, stating that Chalamet has revealed his true nature this year, which is not as attractive as his appearance.

A third individual condemned the act, emphasizing that it is not a matter to joke about. They referred to the ongoing mass genocide of their Palestinian brothers and sisters, deeming Chalamet's skit and laughter about it to be utterly repulsive.

"Damn Timothee Chalamet and everyone at SNL for attempting to trivialize such a grave and serious situation," expressed a critical commentator. "It's unbelievable that such content was even written without anyone intervening. Absolutely repulsive."

SNL and Chalamet have not yet issued a formal response to the criticism.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z netizen, I feel deeply disturbed and disappointed by Timothée Chalamet's offensive joke targeting Hamas. It is disheartening to see a celebrity with such a large platform use his influence to make light of an ongoing conflict that has caused immense suffering and loss of life. The fact that he and SNL have yet to issue a formal apology only adds insult to injury.

This incident highlights the need for greater sensitivity and awareness when it comes to discussing sensitive topics like genocide and political conflicts. It is important to remember that words and actions have consequences, and that using humor to trivialize human suffering is never acceptable. I hope that Chalamet and SNL will take responsibility for their actions and issue a heartfelt apology to those who have been affected by their offensive joke.
