In The Continental, Gibson portrays Cormac O'Connor, who oversaw the operations of the New York branch of The Continental during the 1970s. As a crucial character in the series, Hughes sought out a well-known star for the role and confidently selected Gibson. Despite criticism, the director has defended his choice, highlighting Gibson's positive impact on the set.

While speaking in an interview with TV Insider, Hughes defended the decision to cast Gibson as Cormac in the John Wick prequel series and discussed why Gibson's portrayal of the antagonist is fitting.
