Comedian Matt Rife is intensifying his comedy efforts. Known for his rise to fame on TikTok and appearances on "Wild NOut" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," the comedian has sparked debate with a controversial bit about domestic violence in his latest Netflix special, "Matt Rife: Natural Selection."
The set features a joke about a female server at a restaurant with a black eye.
"My friend who was with me said: Yeah, I feel sorry for her, man. I think they should put her in the kitchen or somewhere where no one has to see her face, you know? And I said, Yeah, but I think if she could cook, she wouldn't have that black eye," Rife shared.
Some people didn't appreciate the humor, but Rife seemed to expect that and followed up the joke by saying, "I figure if we start the show with domestic violence the rest of the show should be smooth sailing." After the joke spread on social media and received backlash, Rife addressed the criticism on Instagram Stories.
"If you have been offended by any of my jokes, please accept my official apology. Click here to address the matter," linking to a website selling helmets designed to protect individuals with special needs from head trauma. CNN has contacted Rife's representatives for a response.
Some people on Rifes Instagram account defended his comedy and urged him to not back down.
He also faced criticism in 2016 and 2020 for offensive tweets.
On Wednesday, Rife posted an Instagram story letting his followers know he also has two comedy special that can be streamed for free on YouTube.
