Rubiales' actions during the awards ceremony after Spain's 1-0 victory over England in Sydney on August 20, where he kissed Hermoso, could lead to criminal charges. This adds to the ongoing investigation by Spain's top sport court for "serious misconduct" and the probe by FIFA, resulting in his provisional suspension.
Hermoso expressed her reluctance to receive a kiss, stating that she felt "vulnerable and like a victim of an act of aggression". Additionally, she revealed that she and her family were coerced by the federation to demonstrate their backing for Rubiales immediately following the incident.
Rubiales, despite facing intense pressure, has persistently refused to step down, asserting that the kiss exchanged was "spontaneous, mutual, euphoric, and consensual." Although Hermoso has garnered support from the Spanish government, players' unions, players, and numerous citizens, Rubiales remains steadfast in his decision not to resign.
Rubiales faced suspension from FIFA on August 27 following his assertive speech to his federation's general assembly. In his speech, he alleged that he was unfairly targeted by "false feminists" and labeled it as a "witch hunt."
