The Hollywood Strikes Explained

The strikes currently underway originated earlier this year, when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) embarked on contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The WGA sought resolution on various significant matters such as fair streaming residuals, job security, the regulation of AI usage, and establishing minimum limits for television writers rooms. Since the negotiations hit a standstill, failing to meet the union's requirements by the set deadline, the strike officially commenced on May 2.

SAG-AFTRA later approached the AMPTP with similar demands regarding AI and streaming residuals, as well as better regulation of self-tape auditions. When their negotiations also stalled, they joined the WGA on the picket lines on July 14. Alongside writers not creating new material, actors are abstaining from performing on sets and promoting affected productions.
