Blockbuster Breakthrough: How Hollywood Triumphs with Filming Amid Dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes

Amidst the simultaneous strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, 'Death of a Unicorn' and 'Mother Mary' defy the odds as they persist in filming, defying industry challenges and captivating audiences alike

Hollywood ground to a halt in May 2023 as the Writers Guild of America initiated a strike following a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion. This led to a pause in almost every production, with the exception of films that had received approval to continue filming.

Despite the writers' strike, some movies were able to continue filming because their scripts had already been completed. Two months later, actors from SAG-AFTRA, the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, also went on strike, joining the writers on the picket lines.

During this historic period of dual strikes, SAG-AFTRA released a set of guidelines for its members. These guidelines outlined which projects were allowed to continue filming and which were not. Members of the SAG union were prohibited from participating in or promoting most movie and TV projects, whether they were in the past, present, or future. This rule prevented actors from attending premieres and screenings in a promotional capacity, and they were also restricted from promoting any of their work on social media.

Actors are prohibited from engaging in various on-camera and off-camera activities, such as stunt work, motion capture work, stand-in work, camera tests, and background work. In order to become a future member of the union, individuals are expected to adhere to these guidelines or face the possibility of not being admitted to SAG-AFTRA.

SAG-AFTRA has recently provided clarification stating that certain films and TV shows can proceed with filming if they receive approval under an Interim Agreement. The application process requires that the movie is not produced by a member of the AMPTP and agrees to adhere to union guidelines. Additionally, projects with the lowest-budget contracts under SAG-AFTRA are also permitted to continue their work.

Here are the films that have continued filming despite the ongoing strike:

- Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, received the approval from SAG-AFTRA.

- Studio A24 reached out to SAG-AFTRA for an Interim Agreement, allowing the production of Mother Mary to resume. This film features Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, and Hunter Schafer.
