The co-creators of Cobra Kai, Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald, have suggested that the Netflix comedy-drama series could be returning for a sixth season in the near future. Alongside co-showrunner Hayden Schlossberg, the duo brought the series to life as a continuation of the 1984 film The Karate Kid, with original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka taking on their iconic roles once again.
Cobra Kai initially premiered on YouTube Premium for Seasons 1 and 2, before Netflix acquired distribution rights for Seasons 3-5. The show has continued to be a top performer on Netflix since the move.
In January 2023, Netflix announced the renewal of Cobra Kai for a sixth and final season. However, production was put on hold in May due to the Writers Guild of America Strike. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the resolution to the Season 5 finale since September 2022.
Cobra Kai Season 6 gets hopeful update for possible 2024 release
Their wait may soon be over, though. Hurwitz indicated as much in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that filming on Cobra Kai S6 is about to kick off.
After the writers strike concluded, we came together again as a team," he mentioned. "It has been truly wonderful to collaborate with those writers once more. We initially began as fans of the Karate Kid and now we have the chance to delve into that universe and take the characters on exciting journeys."
"Now it's time to conclude the series," Hurwitz announced. "Filming will begin immediately after the New Year. We're confident that it will be an exciting and fulfilling experience. We're eager to return to the set. The final season will be a spectacular treat for Cobra Kai fans worldwide."
Heald then explained the decision to end Cobra Kai with Season 6, emphasizing that he, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg made the call, not Netflix.
Cobra Kai creators talk up their new R-rated comedy
"We approached Netflix between Seasons 5 and 6 and informed them that we were prepared to bring the story to a conclusion," Heald recounted. "We presented the narrative we wanted to unfold, and they endorsed the decision... We purposely left room to revisit unresolved storylines in Season 6, as we believe there is value in not ending the series abruptly."
Hurwitz, Heald, and Schlossberg are gearing up to tell another story before Cobra Kai Season 6 hits the screens: Obliterated. Premiered on Netflix on November 30, this R-rated comedy series follows a spec ops team in Las Vegas. According to Hurwitz, "This show’s awesome… if you love big action, R-rated comedy, it’s gonna deliver for you. The cast is incredible, it’s just a big spectacle and lots of fun."
