Chris Hemsworth, known for his portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to join the popular franchise of Mad Max: Furiosa. The actor, now taking on the role of the villain, thoroughly enjoyed his time filming the project, despite the challenges of transitioning from a beloved hero to a malevolent character. Although the plot of Mad Max: Furiosa remains undisclosed, Warner Bros. has unveiled that the film will center around Anya Taylor-Joy's protagonist, who will be taking over from Charlize Theron as the franchise's lead. Taylor-Joy's character will find herself embroiled in a conflict between two rival warlords, with Hemsworth embodying one of them. Hemsworth's deep appreciation for the script became evident after reading just a few pages, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the realization of this film.
When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hemsworth revealed his thoughts on his villainous role as Furiosa and how the film will meet fans' expectations of the Mad Max world. He praised director George Miller for his ability to bring something unexpected to the table and expressed his amazement at the script. However, Hemsworth admitted to feeling unsure about playing a villain, as it was a departure from his previous roles. As the filming date approached, he began to feel anxious. But then, suddenly, everything fell into place, and he found his footing in the role.
Hemsworth had expressed his interest in playing a character in Mad Max: Fury Road before its release. However, the role ended up going to Tom Hardy. But when Furiosa was announced, Hemsworth couldn't resist the chance to work with Miller and immediately confirmed his participation. Miller, age 78, has been the director for every film in the Mad Max franchise since its inception in 1979. Hemsworth admires Miller's work, describing it as a "perfect combination of confidence and knowledge, with a touch of humility and a desire to collaborate."
The Mad Max franchise has enjoyed a series of successes. The first film starred Mel Gibson as Max, an Australian policeman on a mission to stop a motorcycle gang. It was a huge hit and was long considered the most profitable film ever made. Miller then followed up with two sequels, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. After facing numerous delays, Mad Max: Fury Road was eventually released in 2015, marking a three-decade gap since the previous film. It went on to become another blockbuster success. The future will reveal whether Miller can maintain his streak of triumphs.
Mad Max: Furiosa is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 24, 2024.
