Penelope and Colin's romantic scenes in Bridgerton season 3 got so intense that actors Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton ended up breaking a piece of furniture.
In an interview with BuzzFeed UK before the Netflix premiere, Newton, who is 31 years old, hesitated to share more details about the incident to avoid spoiling the scene. Coughlan, aged 37, then shared some small hints about what happened.
She teased, "It's not a bed. Someone thought it was a candlestick before. I was like, 'What do you think we're doing?' I would say it's like a piece of furniture you would see more in the past than in the present."
Coughlan chimed in, "Yeah, we actually broke it during a sexy scene because we were really getting into it. We thought, 'This was so hot.'"
Coughlan and Newton take the lead in season 3, showcasing their friends-to-lovers romance starting from the season premiere on May 16. The love story of Penelope and Colin is based on Julia Quinn's Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth book in her regency romance series that served as the inspiration for the Shondaland show.

Fans of Romancing Mister Bridgerton will recall the steamy scenes between Colin and Penelope in settings like a carriage and in front of a mirror. Both Coughlan and Newton assure viewers that the show will maintain its sexy appeal.
Coughlan and Newton were in character when the mystery furnishing collapsed, catching them by surprise. "It was so typical of us to just burst into laughter," Newton joked to BuzzFeed.
The two actors have been friends since they filmed Bridgerton season 1, which premiered in 2020. Their bond allowed them to feel safe going into the romantic scenes.
Coughlan shared in an interview with Teen Vogue last month, "It is a testament to the fact that we just got to a point where we were so comfortable together. We’d just finished the big sex scene, the most intense and involved one … and we just felt relieved."
Coughlan mentioned that the pair relaxed naked during breaks.
Coughlan and Newton collaborated with Lizzy Talbot, the show's intimacy coordinator, who supported them throughout the entire process.
Coughlan previously mentioned on the U.K.'s This Morning in March that Lizzy treats it like a stunt. She also mentioned that both Luke and herself had a lot of input on what they wanted to do, which was great. Lizzy was more concerned about their comfort level, but Luke and Coughlan had their own ideas on how they wanted things to play out, giving them a sense of control.
The first half of Bridgerton season 3 will be available for streaming on Netflix starting on Thursday, May 16. The remaining episodes will be released on Thursday, June 13.
